Archery Deer Around Dutton

I was fortunate to draw 1 of the 2 NR archery elk tags for Dutton this year (after 11 years of trying). My scouting starts in earnest this coming weekend.

But, my question is about deer in that unit. I think I can buy an over the counter archery tag. What are the deer like on that unit? Do you guys think it would be worthwhile to get a deer tag as well? My emphasis is obviously on elk, but if I am there anyway .........

Thanks.

Yes buy the archery deer tag, just don't get your expectation to high, there is a large herd that comes out of the fields from Antimony.

P.S. congrats on the draw.

If you don't buy the tag you will see some monsters, Buy the tag and you will see a few forkies. I WOULD BUY THE TAG.

You can go on your scouting trip this wknd and still have until June 16th to decide if you want to buy a deer tag. They go on sale June 16th. On-line purchase for you would work out fine. I'll be over in your neck of the woods June 17-19th......

I've been to Dutton and theres not much there, didn't know there was a deadline unless you were from outta state which means you missed the boat alredy.

Left over permits can be purchased over the counter at Division Offices or on the UDWR web site starting June 16 at 7:30 am. Both residents and non-residents can buy the available permits. There are around 10,000 archery deer permits availale. It won't hurt to have a deer permit with you. Last year a co-worker was sitting in his stand over an elk wallow hoping for a nice bull to come in. Instead, a very nice buck walked by and he put it down, a very respectable non-typical. Ya never know!!

I was on the Dutton for the entire archery elk hunt last year. My brother had one of the non-resident tags. During the time there, we saw lots of does, but only one buck. The buck was no monster, but he wasn't to bad either. He was about a 21" maybe 22" 3x4. Like Smokepole said "ya never know". I can't remember what the cost for the additional tag is, but if you can afford to gamble a little money, I would have the deer tag in your possesion. Just don't expect to much. Good luck! Your in for the elk hunt of a lifetime. Enjoy it, very few of your future hunts will compare. Would you like a pinch shooter? LOL! Just kidding...

I know some guys who have shot alot of decent bucks on the dutton and a couple monsters in the 90's. I hunt deer on the boulders side of antimony with a muzzleloader. Shoot me a pm if you want me to get more specific info for ya.
