I decided to buy an elk tag this year and take my 6 year old son hunting with me. My dad, brother-in-law, and nephew would also be coming along for the outing.
We woke up Saturday morning to rain and I new it was going to be a muddy mess. I decided it would be best to stay close to town rather than chance going up the canyon in the snow and rain.
I new of a place that we could possibly see some elk moving through the area so we went to a good vantage point and waited for first light. I started glassing and I heard a shot down below. I immediately spotted a large heard of elk moving up the draw towards us.
As I watched the heard moving towards us I could see other people shooting, but it was still a little to far away to tell if they had got what they were shooting at. The elk were moving towards us and my son was getting excited. As they made there way towards us a bull let out a scream. My son and nephew looked at me with a smile on there face. They thought that was cool.
I spotted the one making the noise; it was a decent 6x6. There was also a nice 5x5 in the heard. As I sized them up I realized they weren't what I was looking for. It was neat to hear them talkin as we watched them go over the hill.
I new there was a good chance that we wouldn't see anything due to the location and the weather so it was neat to be able to show my son some elk. As we started heading back to the truck the rain started to pick up and the boys were getting cold and wet. Just then my brother-in-law spotted two elk that had circled around us and split from the heard. They were both bulls and as I looked at them I could tell both were shooters.
With my son and nephew by my side I loaded the 7mm Rem Mag and made the shot count. On my sons first elk hunt I had shot an elk 30 minute into the hunt. They were sure excited. I can imagine how easy they think this elk hunt is now! Here are pictures of my trophy shot on the Utah General Season Spike hunt. This is what it's all about.
