I and two friends drew the third season (Nov. 5-11) tag for these units. I know it's a very mountainous area, but at that time of year I'm expecting the deer to be down in elevation, and hopefully coming into rut. Was wondering if anyone could give me an idea of what I might be looking at as far as access and opportunity for a good buck. Any information would be appreciated, I'm just beginning my research into the area. Thanks to all in advance.

Hi. Unit 47 on the northern end around Sawyer Creek can be great if there is not much snow. It's a crapshoot that late in the year though. Up higher around timberline in the Hunter Fryingpan is a good spot during the archery/ muzzleloader/ early rifle hunt. Bucks will still be around Ruedi Reservoir if there is no serious snow. If you have lots of snow you can forget about this area. The better bucks will be holed up on private ground in units 43, 47 & 444 when the snow flies. Wouldn't even consider 471 as an option. Most if not all of the unit is above 10,000 feet. Good luck. PM me if you have any questions.

It can be a good hunt if ya avoid the 1200 cow elk hunters and all the private ground along the base of most mountains. Reuidi resrv. has mostly private ground on the 47 side starting from the east end where Fryingpan River comes in. Call the FS office in Basalt to see about seasonal road closures for the public areas. Keep in mind that the west side of 47 and the north side of 471 are basically 'Backyard Aspen' socialite crowd..... PM me if ya want some intel..... I just might have one of the 4th season tags!! ha

You can find some decent access in 43 around the Four Mile Park area which is on the backside of Sunlight Mtn. Ski Resort. A bit further to the south of Four Mile, you can get into the Middle Thompson drainage which would be almost due west of Carbondale...further south in 43 you'll run into the Maroon Bells area which can be some tough country...as stated earlier, you'll see a ton of Elk hunters but if you get off the roads a bit there is quiet country...I took a 4X3 in this unit last year and saw a huge 5X7 non-typical...also saw another guy's old, dark 8X11 taken in the black timber...hopefully you'll hit the rut during 3rd season, but if you gonna spend much time in 43 at that time of the year make sure you pack your chains...some of the forest roads can get pretty hairy...good luck!
