mourning started of cold and wet at 9100 ft. the bulls were doing their thing hard core! in the 2 draws i hunt i herd at least 12 differnt bulls singing their challanges to the world. this was my 12 yr old sons first real elk hunt do to 4 yrs of recovery from broken back i havent been able to start him till this yr. sad i know. but anyways we were joined just before light by 12 diffent guys with head lamps 4 groops came in. groop after gropp dropped right in on the elk below. i was sick. never have i seen this here. on the main trail sure but not in the hunny hole. o well i decided to watch a small draw that connected to a sadle. i shot a rag horn 4 yrs before when i encounterd a guy on my favorite rock outcropping. well we sat it was just first light i started cow calling a bull below in the litle draw went off. yes we sat behid a litle tree for a wind break and started to work him in. then moore guys are just dropping in to us and start to bugle back to him. i hit the flash light at them i was 40 yrds away working this bull. they run over and say hey sorry we didnt know you were here. ok i tell them to listen. they here the other bulls below going nuts. zoom. ya right they got down where they thought i wouldnt see them and went right for him down in the draw. i talked to the aon about what was happening he didnt look happy. lol i said its ok it happens. wasnt 2 mins and bang. first shot of the mourning. bulls started to freak all over going off like mad. i could see a 1? i knew it was a scatter thing below and they were trippng trying to keep the herds together. so cool to watch i wish my boy could have see it happening. shots started to go off like nuts from all over below. we just waited and a spike came threw. i pulled up and dint release the safety. dupe!@ gilligan!!! got back on him right as he was entering the quakes found a open he came threw and missed. well crap. he said that was cool with him. he was freezing. i looked to the west as a majore dark cloud was comming wind gail was like 35 plus. i better start him out and get warm. so off we went still hunting back. on the way i spotted what looked to be a downed elk? walked down to it. yup dead cow. foot prints walking away. i was pissed. i knew what we got to do and was not happy. i talked to him about this surcomestance we were just put in. and how we get to show up when this kind of thing comes into our hunting or even life space. we hit the truck and fired it up. ooooo heat ya... cody says some ones comming up the trail. i look and fg is driveing up. nice!!! i didnt even have to call. i get out and walk up tell her the what about. then she asks if i want it. if i take her to it took around she will wright me a tag for it. cool. i wasnt quite fealing like going right back in but would like to have it. my son steps up!!!!! out of knowhere says ill show her dad you go get matt to asssist us. i about teared up right then. i said are you sure. he had only walked out in the light this mourning and it was 2 miles in. he says i know where it was. ok off i go fealing a litle weird letting my son go into the woods with someone i dont know. cop or not that was weird. picked up my freind and the gear to bring it out and was at the elk 2 hrs later. showed her wher i found the shell casings. she picked them up she found the bullet in the elk and wrote me the permit. then walked with my boy back out. he was soaked clear threw but loving it buy the look on hin face. six bulls were tackin buy the guys that droped in. 6x6 6x5 5x5 5x4 were the best. loaded up and came home. heard the forcast and said ok. home we went with a free elk. a major lesson for my son. 1 proud dad! and a none waisted elk. win. win. win. win. ken
Sounds like you had a good day. Hell I wish i could get into something like that. Thanks for your help man. It didnt pan out but at least you are man enough to help someone out. I owe you. If you are going out again give me a hollar. I might be able to go.
Why did you only take the hind quarters and back strap from that cow elk? it was only about a mile from the trail head. because their was about 15 other hunters still on that mountain that had not tagged out that would have taken that entire cow. That is to bad that so much went to waste.
Next time you accuse people of poaching make sure you have some kind of proof that they did it, not just accuse the first three guys you come across on the trail.
how did you stumble accross that dead cow? even though it was only about fifty yards of the trail it was definetly not visible from the trail.
Those 20 year old kids that were bugling next to you that morning, that you were flashing your light at took that 6 by 5. and for kids that was some of the best bugling ive heard. And do you realize that the shot you squoze off at the spike through the trees just barely went over those kids heads?
that shot i took was up towards the sadle to the south east.the kids were 400yrds to the west.lmfaobt!!!! they left me 20 minnits before i shot. my shot was like the 10th of the mourning. ya the kids bugled great. did great as well. 3 quarters back straps and tenderloins. the rest she ask me to leave for another officer to look at. and i appollagized to you for the accusation. didnt i???? i was looking for a reaction on your faces. did the spike you lost jump the fence????? my boy found that blood trail i think you lost. like i said on the hill im sorry for the accusation. if i did hit it that sucks but i didnt find any blood and it didnt miss a step. i saw it from the trail but had to use my scope to tell it was an elk. the lady fish cop spotted it as my boy walked right past. the kids and there dad are great people!!!! they knew my buddy and they assisted cutting apart and packed the bulk of the elk out with the 5x6. did you know that. then i returned the favor and drove both elk to the bottom. did ya know that as well? also that the elk was offerd to me i didnt ask for it? regardless sorry for the accusation.
its ok. i did accuse them. im just glad now that the fg has his ip address. when i told them the fish cops wanted to talk to them. the hauled ass the other way. the cams she set up just might have your pic,s.. dupe cammerras. ya lololol if you returned to the seen and maybee went over to where the shells were laying. you may be getting a phone call.
I'm relaxed, I just don't like people trying to be heroes when they are telling fictional stories.I used the wrong words I will admitt that, but I was just trying to convey that some people were a little ticked off by his actions that day.not just with what happened with my group.
