Colorado Unit 54 Access

I was chatting with a guy that drew unit 55 last night. He mentioned that access in the Gunnison units ? 55, 54, 66 is getting tough because the ranches along the bottoms are preventing access to public land.

Is there any truth to this? It seems like there is plenty of public roads. I drew a late season tag for unit 54. Heading down in a week to begin scouting.

You can get into 54 by two main roads - Soap Creek and the road to Rainbow Lake (which takes you up to the baldies). There are some USFS 4x4 roads through private land which have been closed off. But it shouldn't be too big of a deal. I don't know how low the animals usually are by last season. They may all be on private land anyway.

So has the access to Flat Top Mountain and Red Mountain been blocked?

I wasn't aware of the roads closing. It might have altered my decision to apply for that unit.

Ryan, I'm hoping to secure a LO tag for 54 so I have poured over topo maps of the area. Really you should be able to acess more than enough country from the soap creek and rainbow lake rds. Not sure about the roads your referring too.

Yeah the Soap Creek and Rainbow Lake Roads do offer a ton of access. If the access to Flat Top and Red Mountain has been limited then that cuts off access to some great country.

Thansk for the thoughts.

There is access to 54 on the north side off Kebler Pass. On the west side you can get into the unit from Crawford/Black Mesa. There is Mill Creek, Stueben Creek, etc. Lots of options.
