Wood Stove Installation Question

I'm putting an old Fisher wood burning stove in my open ceil garage. I've researched all the Dura Triple Walled pipe installation systems. Looks like between $400 and $500.

Not looking to torch the shop but has anyone installed wood stove, that meets typical building code laws, that is less expensive than triple wall pipe.

If that's the only solution, I'm good, but hate to drop $400/500 if there are other solutions out there.

I got 7 feet from the top of the stove to the bottom of the roof rafter, then 3 feet through the rafter to the plywood roof, then another 4 to 5 feet outside, to get 2 feet above the ridge line. I can use black, single wall pipe (cheap but triple wall pipe comparison) up to the bottom of the rafter, but from there it's triple wall pipe and various roof cap parts.

Thanks

Ain't a Cheap way Lumpy!

But Keep it Safe!:D

I Believe there are some Double Wall pipes that are approved for Wood Stoves but they won't be much cheaper if at all!

A Big Trick/No-No here in the Basin is for Local Tards to Bring a 6" or 8" piece of Schedule 40 or 80 home from the Oil Field & use it for a Stove Pipe in their House!

NEVER DO THIS & HERE'S WHY:

1-The Heavy Pipe Takes forever to Warm up & Start Drawing/Flueing!

2-When it Finally does Get Hot enough to Flue,It gets Cherry Hot & Usually Burns the Structure down!

I Can't Tell You How many Times I've heard locals say:

My Flue is Schedule 40/80 I'll never have to replace it!

Or they'll say:

I just replaced My Flue with New schedule 40/80 Pipe & it won't Draw!

The Bad part is most/All the Newer Wood Stove Pipe has an Inner wall that's Insulated & This Newer Pipe does not Draw as good as the Old Triple Wall Pipe that was built 20 years ago!

But You'll need double or Triple Wall Pipe that is approved for the Wood Use Lumpy!

The Pipe from the Stove up to where the Double/Triple Wall starts (7 Feet you're Talkin) can be Single Wall Pipe!

But the Double/Triple Wall Pipe must be down below the bottom of your Rafters & Go Clear Up & Out to Keep You Safe!

There Ain't a Good CHEAP Safe Way Lumpy!

Spend the Cash & do it the Safe/Right way!

And I'll be the First to admit the Approved Flue Pipe for Wood Burning Applications are Spendy!

Spend the extra $ and go with stainless steel metalbestos or equivalent... triple wall sucks and run the insulated pipe all the way from ceiling to the very top don't switch back to single wall after you're through the roof.

One More thing Lumpy!

I Know you don't have Inspectors watching You but You'll Still want it Right!

Where Your Double/Triple Wall goes up in to the Attic/Insulation!

Get a Piece of Single Wall Pipe 3' Long & a couple sizes bigger in Diameter to get through the Insulation!

Now We're Spending even More of your Huntin Money!:D(But Not Much!)

2lumpy,I had to run 28' of triple wall in my home, per the County inspector. It's not cheap, but I know I won't be burning down the home.

Pleasedeer, what type of propane heat did you go with. I built a shop this summer and have been leaning towards wood heat. I had someone else tell me to go with propane. Said it might be a better, cheaper route. What kind of heater are you running? How much square footage are you heating? Sorry to hijack your post 2lumpy.

Follow bobcats advice. Also burn well seasoned wood and be sure to sweep the pipe at least every fall depending on how much you use it.

Deloss

Use the money for fuel and drive to my Home for the Winter.

If you went into "Snow & Ice withdrawals", the California Sierra's have x10'ss of feet. Or, Pacific Ocean Deep Sea Fishing (Note; California Girl's are in hibernation except, down South). Take a Train ride to Sacramento for the Sportsman's Expo January 19th-22nd and, invite other MM'ey's to join you on the Train. Be sure to bring DW, forthewall & grosventrehunter with you.

Now, doesn't all that seem far better than stove pipe assembly.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-15-17 AT 05:51PM (MST)[p]JagerDad, that would be a gathering reminiscent (and as rowdy) of the Rendezvous of old, and someone would likely get drunk and shoot somebody, just for the fun of doing it. :) And....I've taken that Train over the Sierra Nevadas, and just so you know, they are on the last leg of the a long cross country run, and the crappers in those johns haven't be serviced for a week and they don't get cleaned until they get to Sacramento. Not a pretty thing!!!

THANKS EVERYONE for your comments on my wood stove installation. I'm going wood because the forest above my house is almost entirely dead from chinese beetle kill and I'm logging some of it and building a timber/beam "piece en piece" style addition to my mountain cabin, so I have tons of scrape fire wood. May as well burn it as haul if off or just burn it in the back yard.

Regarding the chimney piping. Your suggestions and cautions are well received. I will head every word shared, from each of you. It will be triple wall from the bottom of the rafters through the roof!!!! I was somewhat sure I was going to go down the triple pipe trail but I knew if there was a legitimate alternative, you ole boys would know what it was and share it.

Besides all the "cat" piss ;) and vinegar that takes place here, you guys always come through when it counts, with the real world solutions. I appreciate it.

There is a tremendous wealth of knowledge that participate on this hunting forum, from legal, technology, medical, zoological, military, engineering, farming, construction, financial, electrical, plumbing, law enforcement, automotive, etc, etc. It's really an amazing cauldron of knowledge.

I don't think there is hardly a question a guy could ask that someone, or six, would not provide a very knowledgeable response to. Where else could you find that practical diversity.

Thanks again, I'll be headed to the hardware store in the morning.

Hey, cosmic- I just did a little reading about those stainless metalbestos. I'm impressed. Don't look to be all that much more per inch than the Dura's.

Thank you.
