A recent article about my Father

RE: A recent article about my Father

That's pretty cool! So, which chute coming out of the tunnel is "the bean man"?

RE: A recent article about my Father

Hey Bean!

Did He ever let you play with His Fire Crackers?:D

Or Just not that He knows about?:D

I got to pull a pull wire igniter once on a hand held charge but didn't get to throw it. I did get to see just about everything used for setting a slide off go bang. My favorite was the 75 recoiless rifle that CDOT used before it was replaced with the 75 pack howitzer and before the avalauncher came into use. As a side note when the avalauncher (CO2 propelled cannon) was being developed someone discovered that a can of alpo dog food with a bit of friction tape on it would launch with resaonable accuracy. More than a few cases of dog food got shot at a distant cottonwood tree in our back pasture.

Very interesting article BeanMan. You should be proud, as no doubt many lives have been saved.

"(Avy paths on the tunnels? west side now bear the names of Judson?s three sons as well as Mitsy, the family dog, and Mishka, the family cat.)"

There is one named BeanMan? :)

Wow... a "pioneer" no doubt. Cool story. I'd be sharing with many as well. Coming from an upbringing involving a lot of snow sports, I definitely appreciate his work!

RE: A recent article about my Father

Way too cool Fred!! Congrats to your Dad on a great career. I wonder how many lives he has saved? Too bad his type of work will be obsolete in a few years after global warming turns the planet into a desert. ;-)

Those guy were awesome. I knew a few of the first ones in Utah.
Took my first avalanche training in 1971. Never did get use to putting that 2 lbs of explosive between my legs while I pulled the igniter.

RE: A recent article about my Father

Rawhide tough is the way those guys was.
Great write up.

The first classes I took were taught by Ron Perla so I met him a couple of times.
Atwater and Lachapelle were just recognized legends that I never met.
All the old Avy guys were amazing in what they were doing at the time and the newer ones are just upping the game on their shoulders.
It"s still a very dangerous job today. They lost a patroller in California earlier this year doing control work.
Makes me glad I'm out of the game now.

Fred,
I never met your dad.
If he was a fraction of you,
then he was a damned good man.

You look a lot like him.

Hope to see you in a few months.

A self-made specialist with interests beyond the norm. That's the spice. Great story.

RE: A recent article about my Father

Yup, he's 83 and a bit grumpy at times. Now that he and Mom are in Arvada I don't have to go to Steamboat and shovel snow every other weekend. My two Brothers are living within 5 miles of their new place. Dad's getting used to living in the Front Range but he can't drive anymore (which is probably a good thing) due to macular degeneration.
