Gun and scope question

I didn't have the money to buy a 1500.00 scope. I have a new 116 Savage 7mm Rem Mag.
I added a Vortex HS-T 4-16?44 with Warne mounts.
Will this gun be effective for Deer at 600 to 1000 yards? Or do I need to think more of only up to 600 or a little more ? I have a Kimber .270 and I'm very accurate up to 400 with it. I won't shoot the Kimber over 400 as the energy is low after that.

One if not the BEST manners to know is to attend a club shoot match that is an across the course modified sniper training or, attending an NRA High Power Match with an agreement that your score does not get recorded and they let you use your Deer Hunting Rifle.

The latter incorporates various POSITIONS and also, slow, timed and rapid shooting + a reload. Some men have said it is the best for Hunters.

My point is not about your Rifle or Scope but rather your skills as a shooter. Once you attend 1, 2, 3 + events, you will understand more about your comfort and abilities than anyone writing or chatting about the main topic.

You may also find the friendships and abundance of help by senior match shooters bonds you to returning. Senior does not always mean age. Often a High School aged High Power Shooter whom seeks to do well at Camp Perry has knowledge's that could flood a new shooters mind.

A couple friends of mine have books. Look up Glen Zediker's website and also David Tubb's. Funny...my Daughter stole David's family Horse when we were at his Home.

Those two gentlemen GIVE AWAY more FREE knowledge (especially Glen) than most shooters will learn in a lifetime.

I do not know right now if David gives private classes but one major factor "I" will say is find windy days, the more wind the better, and go practice. If you can learn to read the winds and do well, this alone is a massive achievement in one's personal goals.

The very very best manner to get very good and at Home is to invest in a SCATT unit. See www.scattusa.com

I have two systems and if we have a large party, everyone is inside our indoor Range and the "KITCHEN" is almost empty. A SCATT system is an instant way to gather folks and do not be surprised when the LADIES do far better than most Men.

However, as a Personal Training System that you bought for yourself, it is always in the Home ready for you to get better.

The sad part is American's like to shoot real ammo and in BULK. Such is not the case in most other countries. That's why most other countries beat us in Shooting. Sales of SCATT systems are high everywhere but in America, very few shooters ever even heard of such a system.

If the cost of a SCATT system seems to high, find a way to sell things so you have such a system in your Home.

One last hint... another friend named Troy Lotten wrote a "Training Drill" that shows "Minimum Arch of Movement" "HOLDING DRILL". It's free and Glen has it on his website.

It all boils down to DEDICATION. How badly does any shooter desire to be far better then he/she currently is. Yes, a Match Shooter can take his/her skills afield. Never listen to Nay-Sayers.

Sorry for such a long reply.

Hey DM!

I Have an Old 7 MAG!

When I Got it 37 Years ago I Thought I Was 'STYLIN'!

Touched it off again this Last Year!

But in today's Standards it's considered a Short Range Weapon!

Thanks Jager and Bess. I don't think the 7mm is a super long range weapon but I don't want a Lapua, lol.
I will just have to find out .

Madness, the 7mm Remington is capable of what you posted. With the powders and bullets available today, it is anything but a short range weapon. My advice is to shoot it. Alot. Then shoot it some more. 1000 is a long way from 400. mtmuley

Thanks Muley, actually if I could shoot out to 675 yards for elk or deer I would be thrilled. I've never attempted over 450 or so on a deer.

7RM is a fine tool for the job . Only a metric fork ton of practice will decide if you can use the tool to its potential. Be honest with yourself and you will find a happy medium.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-12-17 AT 08:57PM (MST)[p]I have a Vortex HSLR 4-16x50 on a 6.5x284. I have shot out to 1000yds with this set up at the range with no problems. I wouldn't think of shooting that far a game though.
