LAST EDITED ON Feb-18-17 AT 05:53PM (MST)[p]My brother and I got Winchester pump. 22 rifles in 1970 for Christmas. They were new and I took great care of it. My boy borrowed it and said it was stolen. I think they sell up to 800.00 in that condition. I sure miss it.
My Dad let me shoot it enough that I would not miss a beer can at 100 yards.
The Ruger 10/22 I have now just doesn't thrill me.
My father is 87 now and is very frail. He sure has been the best Dad. He took me Elk hunting at 15 and I shot a big 6 point Elk above the Lochsa River. He gave me a 1940 Enfield 30.06 Sharpshooter rifle for that hunt.
If anyone ever wants to sell a Winchester .22 lump like that let me know.

I'm sorry to hear that your .22 was stolen. I've been fortunate to not have anything taken from me that I truly cherish. I hope that you are able to find another one that makes you feel the way you did.

My uncle has an old Remington nylon 66 .22 I used to shoot a lot, he also had an old hex barrel pump .22 but was missing the rod for the tube so we shot it single shot. Crappy thunderbolt .22 ammo 1 in 10 wouldn't fire but my cousin and I were in heaven when he took us out to shoot.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-19-17 AT 03:42AM (MST)[p]61 would be my guess, although production was stopped in 63.

Somehow through business acquaintances, my dad came to be in possession of an old black powder wheel gun that was verified to have been used on the set of Outlaw Josey Wales. It got tucked away down at his shop. One day when he went for it to pass it to me it was realized it had been stolen. Never even recall seeing the gun but it burns an empty hole that some jack was stole it and probably hocked it for fifty bucks.

Most of them were, back when craftsmanship still meant something.

Hey DM!

I'd almost Bet it was older than 1970?

Seem's like Winchester had Model 61's & 62's?

But Most of them were built quite a few years ago!

One of my older brothers still has my dad's Model 1906, which
preceded the Model 61. God, I loved shooting that gun as a kid. Luckily, I have some of my dad's old pistols. You're right in that they don't make them like they used to.

My Dad had two guns. A .410 bolt action that got run over when it fell off the tractor. It would shot around corners. And a single shot .22 that was likely made for Sears or Montgomery Wards back in the 1920s or 30s. I'm sure I shot a thousand Richardson Ground Squirrels with that little .22, it was like an extension of my left arm from the time I was 12 until I went off to college. Somewhere along the way it disappeared. If you saw it at a Pawn Shop or a Gun Show you wouldn't offer $20 for it, I'd give $500 to have it back.

Exactly 2lumpy ! It's really the only thing besides photos and some scouting awards I had from my childhood.
I have the kindest and best Father in history. I really appreciate the love of outdoors he taught me.
I would take a hunting trip with him again over anything though. Or a steelhead trip again on the Columbia River. We really hammered some big ones in the 90s.

I have DADS Model 62 and his SAVAGE 99 .300.

I MISS grand dads 721 3006. Gave it to a cousin her husband thought he was going to hunt...pretty sure they sold it..... I killed one elk with it after he died just because....

Another one never I actually had but sure as heck feel bad that I don't.

My Grandfather drove a team of horses and a wagon with a wood barrel of alfalfa seed, from Utah to Alberta, Canada in 1898, he took with him a 45/70 Highwall, designed for Winchester by John Browning. As I recall it still had a Browning stamp on it but could be wrong. It was given to my Dad's oldest brother who cherished it and keep oiled and polished. As a kid I would look through the window of his gun case and dream of the things my Grandfather did while carrying that rifle. It was given to my eldest cousin when my Uncle passed away and I saw it many years later. It was filthy from neglect, the riflings were spirals of rust peeling away from the inside of the barrel. It nearly took my breath away.

I begged him to sell it to me but he was unwilling to part with it. (He didn't care about it as a rifle, to him is was just something Grandpa had owned, no more than a hand saw or a butter churn, stuck in a basement closet.)

What a wasted family treasure.

That was over 25 years ago and I can still remember how stunned I felt when I looked down that barrel and saw those spirals of rust peeling off the bore.

I have had a few stolen from me, Ruger 22 pistol, Glock 40 cal, a single shot 20 gauge. But all of the guns that have meaning to me I still have. My Dad bought me a 10 22 when I was 8. Then a Coast to Coast 20 gauge Master Mag when I was 12. I inherited Dad's 30-06 Spring field he sportserized. I have two guns that walked across the plains with my family. I sure hope I never loose any of the ones that are part of me. I sold two guns in my life, one a 243 that I traded for a Browning auto with a poly choke on it. Took it to a gun show in Boise in the 80's and sold it for $500.00 to a Lady that I'm sure she was given instructions to buy every gold trigger she could. I took the money and bought my Ruger Model 77 Bull barrel 25-06. Best gun I have ever shot. Back when I was reloading I shot a 5 shot group at 200 yards that a quarter covers all five up. And that was off the hood of the truck. Wow great trip back down memory lane.

RE: Tri's Gun and Banjo

If you go to the below link and follow steps, you will learn about 61's.
NOTE: Step 1, 2, 3,..... and read carefully + slowly. Allow memory to assist.

Could your 1970 Winchester Pump actually be a Model 270..? See below.

By the way...That man has a 5 String Banjo...My Favorite. I even took lessons and learned to Play Smoky Mountain Break Down...and more. Now that's Memory Lane.

RE: Tri's Gun and Banjo

LAST EDITED ON Feb-20-17 AT 11:41AM (MST)[p]I think it was a model 62. It shot shorts and longs and had the 15 round tube.

RE: Tri's Gun and Banjo

Virtually every Tube Fed 22 fits that description. You should look at pictures and many of them. Also look at Remington Pump Actions.

Remembering a Model number from so long ago may not be your best friend in a search. There are also pictures of the new boxes and that picture is worth a Thousand words.

Jagerdad :)

Grandpa gave his model 61 to my son a few years ago. He earned it while in sixth and seventh grade, mowing lawns and shoveling snow in his home town of Portola. He would hitchhike out to Sierra Valley and shoot rabbits (jacks and cottontails), then sell them to an old man who knew how to cook 'em for $.25 apiece to keep in cartridges. Since the retail "value" of the rifle is not even an issue here, he chose to have it refinished and blued. It looks and shoots like the day it was made.

I had a Remington 572 pump 22 rimfire rifle. It had sort of a blonde colored stock and a copper colored aluminum receiver and barrel. I don't know what that particular model was called. When I inherited it the gun was beautiful. I put a lot of rounds thru that little rifle when I was a teenager and I was rarely ever without it. Of course I did dumb things to it like "refinishing the stock". No doubt I diminished the value of it quite a bit. I gave it to my son and I'm sure he still has it. It's not just the gun I miss though. It's the times I had with it that I miss. Shooting jack rabbits, magpies, skunks, carp, frogs and any other vermin I found on the ranch. I was a pretty good shot with it too. There was also a Winchester model 62 pump gun with exposed hammer. It was also in immaculate condition when I inherited it. I still have that gun. Those two rifles were my "go-to" guns for everyday use. And I mean EVERY day.

Good times...

>I would like a 572. Great
>classic!

Sure is! I still have my 572 but probably haven't shot it in over 20 years!

Only sold two guns in my life. one was a 300 win mag I bought when 16 for our MN moose hunt. don't miss it, dang thing kicked!
Other gun was a 870 16 gauge which was given to me by a grandpa who died before I was born. Was a stupid teenager when I sold that gun, won't ever make that mistake again.

Lots of guys shooting .17 HMRs but I still like shooting a .22 LR. It's just for target so I don't flinch with my deer rifles.

>I would like a 572. Great

Love the old 572 "Field Master"! My dad gave it to me for my 16th birthday. I put so many rounds through it as a kid, I had to send it back twice to Remington for worn out parts. Both times they repaired it for free. I killed more squirrels and jack rabbits than I could count with that gun. Still take it out of the safe from time to time and think about them good old days.

Is that the one you threw into the river? LOL

Zeke

PS: I have a 62 and a 61. The 62 predates the 61 and it has a hammer whereas the 61 does not. Not a finer .22 has been made than these two rifles IMHO>
