Hello all. The boys in our Boy Scout troop have decided to take a trip down from Montana to experience the area around Moab and Mesa Verde, followed by a couple days on the south rim of the Grand Canyon. I have been on the web helping to outline the trip and discovered that portions of Mesa Verde will not be accessible to us because we will be traveling in the Troop bus and that portions of Arches National Park will be closed to visitors this year due to road construction. That being said, I would appreciate any assistance anyone with experience visiting (or living in) these areas could offer on outlining a trip and "can't miss" things to see or do.

Thanks.

My hunting spot is so secret, not even the elk have found it yet.

Stop in Bluff
Go to Mexican hat
Swing into gooseneck state park
Spend another day going to Muley Point and the Valley of the Gods
Then 4 corners and monument valley that can be done in one day but go slow and spend 2 days
You and the boys will remember this 4 ever
To bad Mesa Verde won't work out

Going to Durango and riding the train to Silverton is an adventure if you like trains powered by steam
There is so much to see in the 4 corners area.
Stay in the RV park in Bluff and spend 2 weeks you will not be disappointed!!
We did this trip a couple years ago and can't wait to go back.
Use Google search for bluff utah and surrounding areas
Lots of history there!

Are you with just a regular Troop of 11-14 yr. olds? ENTRATA High Adventure Base was a lot of fun for our Varsity Scouts when we did it. (I think boys must be 14 or older). Mountain biking, repelling, and a float trip of 10 miles and water play on the Colorado River. Plus we visited both Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. If you travel eastward on I-70, be sure to check out Fremont Indian State Park near Richfield, Utah as well.

If you can do it...a bus wont do it, how big of a bus do you have?

On a dirt road, at Moab, drive west along the north side of the river, thru Potash, all the way to the top of Canyonlands, then leave, (no reason to stay, you will be diasappointed), go to Deadhorse Pt on the way out.

The NPS purposefully over rates their roads. I drove it on a stationwagon. I was to the bottom in an Astro van but the gate was locked. You'll need to go after the NPS does their end of summer grading.

You can go rim to rim in the canyon in 2 days (they can, but can you)...3 days if you take your time. They can probably go to the river and back in a day. You would leave the NR, stay @ the Phantom Ranch bunkhouse (14m downhill), eat 2 meals there, buy a sack lunch and walk the 9? Miles.to the SR. All you would need to carry is a Camelback Pack.
