I wondered how many of you love learning...? For those who like Cartoons, a Monster Muley is seen at 11:00 1:00 and 20:00 along with a BIG MISS.....That would be talked about back over a Campfire.

Deermadness, you understand #30 above and #29 + the following discussions. So maybe use your seniority to explain to this gang why Math is; Your Best Friend.

I doubt there will be many replies directly tied to the subjects yet "I TRY" by posting here and back under Feddock's post.

The young man talking in the video's is about the best teacher anyone could wish for. Some video time now may replace a Fall miss with a hit. Remember, for him....This is a Hobby, not how he goes Hunting....if he even Hunts at all.

Barometric pressure could explain why I missed that big 4X4 buck outside Chama, NM back in 1979. That's my story now. Yes, that's it!

There's always rotation of the earth at longer ranges.

DW... You are 100% Correct.

Deermadness.... I avoid Metric Dots & Turrets.

The "Range" in this HOBBY is known. The Challenge is correcting for "Everything Else" then releasing 1 Shot.

I stay only with Inches (Dot's Included) with First Focal Plane & Turrets geared in Inches. Sadly. many folks do not know if their scope is 1st or 2nd focal plane or what Parallax is. This "Not Knowing" is certainly not related to dumb, it is and, has been related to no one explaining such to US 10, 20 years ago vs Retail advertisers simply seeking our Money $$$$.

The link simply opens to all of you, a HOBBY and, this Hobby has correlations to our needs as Hunters....if us old farts will watch and not be grouchy or nay-sayers. Gee :) ....That's a lot to ask for :)

I once thought Trigonometry is a foreign language until a friend explained it in words I understood. Then, shocking as they say it happens, a light bulb lit within me and it was a clear as a spring morning. I could do math derivations faster on paper than on a scientific calculator. When looking through a rifle scope I was able to do wrought Trig formula's on the fly in my head as I looked at several places Deer would come into view. The closest thing is learning Music. In my case, the 5 string Banjo.

To watch the entire series would be good for most, especially young fresh minds. Watching the Optics sections then External Ballistics is what I hope many of you, my age, will watch. You men already have a lifetime of experience and, although DW is correct "Get Closer", knowing all of the discussed information will be called upon mentally, automatically, when afield because you exposed your minds to it.

Try this segment; "Part 1":

Here is "Part 2":

I have so much information's rolling around, un-organized, often lost, with in my head, in moments as this, I spill out more than most care to read...My Bad.

Here is another manner to consider watching. If us older farts get up to speed then some of us can explain to our children and friends why they can opt to wait until they have decades of experience or, achieve more hits sooner and build from there forward.

Jager,
I wish I had time a day money for long range instruction. The good news is I've only missed one animal with a rifle in my life. I've missed 4 with a muzzle loader though.
The longest 2 shots were 470 and 435 yards. I would take a longer shot at an elk but for deer I would rather it be under 450 yards. I shot my elk in December at 375 yards just as it was deciding to vacate the area.
A lot of stealth is my preferred method and with decent Optics it usually works. I have had many deer spot me and leave before I could sight in on them but that's hunting !

Deermadness, your Hunting history is true Hunting. There is little to no need to be launching bullets at game, far away. In my Book, you are an ethical Hunter.

I went on to watch the following lesson plan on:
(a different segment).

When the lesson came to 14:30 I stopped the video and tried to CALL MY SHOT... for fun and as a refresher. In no more than a few seconds I told myself the distance at 40 degrees is 770 yards. In real life I would have held for that distance instead of the 1000. Yes, I am calling it yards not his Meters.

I turned the video back on and after he did his Math, the true distance was 766. I was off by 6 yards but I called it within seconds.

I am NOT boasting. What I did was field practice while old and sitting at Home, all, just for giggles.

Truth be known, I am far from smart but I have been shooting all year long all my life at Ground Squirrels on open lands that go from near sea level to over 1000 feet and, with shots that have no distance limits. Up Hill & Down Hills all day. Plus years of competitive shooting where learning the mirage in the Rifle disciplines is critical. Handgun matches like the Bianchi Cup is different.

My point is, we can hone shooting skills now via computers, which never existed in my early years. Just lay ego's aside and learn from missing and wrong math solutions, all while sitting at Home.

Deermadness, you have the high IQ ... certainly, Not me. I suspect many to most men "In The Trades" (Plumbing, Construction, Heavy Equipment Operators) all have finely honed Math skills. IF they, like the rest of us spend time, any time, watching and listening to this young man explain shooting at crazy long ranges not truly connected with ethical Hunting then, our short ranges become longer if that makes sense.

The video series is connected to a new Hobby our former military youths are attracted to: For Fun and The Challenge. We can benefit from the lessons and still remain ethical Hunters.

Aim Small, Hit Small....

LAST EDITED ON Apr-02-17 AT 04:32PM (MST)[p]I honestly need to try some very long range shots but need a place with a bench or buy mysf a good portable bench.
The practice I had as a youth gave me skill and confidence.
I learned that gripping the stock properly, trigger control using only my trigger fInger and making it work without my hand and arm moving is paramount.
Then I always take 3 good breaths and let the air out which gives me about 5 or 6 seconds to take a steady shot.
Having a good range finder really takes a lot out of the equation quickly except barometric pressure and wind.
I zeroed my Kimber at 300 yards so I only would need to use the first two bdc dots at 500 yards .
You may be inspiring me to experiment more but I'm sure your math is very good. I'm slowly losing parts of my math and physics education the older I get.

DM, I have an rcbs table, but didn't like it so I build one out of 4X6 timbers an a 3inch thick table top.

Probably overkill, but it doesn't move much.

DeerMadness.... I Love You.

You have a spark. No need to worry to much about having a perfect bench. I have used nothing and found it to be all I needed. Then I found a small plastic 4' fold up table and I threw it in the truck with a lawn chair. I made RICE BAGS decades ago using levi jeans pants legs cut to 10" sewn shut, filled with Rice then sewn shut.

The bags laid a top the table and it was fine.

The CRITICAL aspect is "TO GO SHOOT".

Shoot Rocks anything and don't give a hoot to having an accurate range. The more one shoots = the luckier one gets.

Then the following week, repeat. DO TAKE NOTES. Write down anything. From where the Sun is positioned from/to you to the time, a guess at the weather, Gun, what ammo and....All of your Thoughts. If such is not written down, the day of practice never happened.

No One needs to have big $$$$. You can use a 22 rimfire. The task is simply to Practice and in a manner not done previously. In time, especially if watching these video's, more will personally be built upon. The building comes automatically because it is; so much FUN.

Forget Math, just have fun. It's akin to an old saying: "Watch your Penny's and the Dollars will take care of themselves".

Jagerdad :)

Careful Jager, we don't want to look like we have a Bromance here, lol Im joking.
You convey a sharp mind and write very well. I think you've written plenty of reports in your life and must out do me triple in typing speed.
You seem very self aware and I've enjoyed your thoughts in so many posts here.
I guess it's made me think of things I've let go that I have never achieved. Guns are a great asset of freedom we have that many don't. I wonder sometimes how the future of our country will proceed and whether many will want or need desperately the protection they provide.
With the good weather coming I need to start a shooting log and get practice and data.

I am willing to assure 99.9% of all readers that, because of time, the manner all Societies change due to a PENDULUM reality seeming everything Re-Encounters, be such Mankind, Earth, whatever... if one of us who can talk to strangers showed up on a New York sidewalk and asked anyone under age 35 if they would like to learn to live in the wild, a major percentage would say: YES.

I attribute it to simply...a pendulum that never fails to repeat itself....like History. I feel the strongest OPEN factor may be the movie: "The Hunger Games".

I have had Young College Sorority Sisters brought to my Home by my Daughter and they took Guns + Ammo while in love with Obama & Hating Guns and return, Loving all guns, saying Obama lead them incorrectly and 7%, went out and bought their own 1st Gun.

Go ask in your community in the most Yuppie, Liberal areas and if you approach the topic right, you bet, they are dying to be TAUGHT.

We can not always WAIT to be Taught. Jump in and teach oneself is not a bad idea. Heck, it's worked for Thousands of Years.

I guess I am straying from the main topic a tad but if we old farts let our Youths know....WE WILL TEACH THEM...they will flock to you and, all you know, will be carried by future Mothers & Fathers.

That may be the best REAL thing a forum such as this could ever Produce....Seasoned Elders passing knowledge's forward.

That alone would be a fine Head Stone inscription.

Jagerdad :) :)

So?

I Guess I've Never Missed Now!

Just Didn't Hit Where I Was Aiming!

Thanks for SPLAININ it!

Okay, Jag, I'm checking in. But I feel like I just walked into a room full of "freinds of Einstein and Hawking, so I'm going to politely apologize for interrupting the train of thought and quietly back out and shut the door.

I haven't the knowledge to shoot beyond the curvature of the earth, but I envy those that can, and I'm too lazy to ever be one of y'all.

Peace bro.

Elk & 2lumpy... Hugs and Love Yah also :)

I am seldom brief. When I open up like I said above, I say so much it becomes to much. I got to passionate in the subject. I knew I would be out of bounds in Campfire but I kept trying and the trying was/is not needed.

I must have been feeling my Oats yesterday... I even walked into the middle & back lawns to see the grass Mom mowed and the work she did.

This Apology goes to everyone.

Jagerdad :-(

Nah, no need for apologies Jag. I hope you get another good helping of oats, again today. By enlarge, we all have our teddy bear interests and like to share them. Just cuz others have other interests doesn't make yours wrong or any less worthwhile than anyone else's.

I hope you have a great day.
