What time of year can one expect to see the forest roads opening in Thousand Lakes? I'm itching to go down there but don't want to show up to ten feet of snow behind a closed gate.

I am heading that way on Saturday. Taking my razor. But I will be on snow tracks. ?? Next trip up in May I will run tires. It's amazing after popping threw a few snow drifts the deer and elk are just off the road. No one up that high to bother them.

The snow was coming off fast this weekend. Started hitting snow drifts at 9300 feet. The warm windy weather blew the ice off Fish lake on Sunday !

BIGJOHNT, Thank You for the Pictures. God sure has Blessed You & Yours....Yes, You also Elkaz-ah-rooney :)

I understand modern History as saying Brigham Young led an exodus of persecuted Mormons along the western wagon trails in search of a sanctuary in ?a place on this earth that nobody else wants.? Young led a vanguard company across the Rocky Mountains to investigate Utah?s Great Salt Lake Valley, an arid and isolated spot devoid of human presence. Young arrived July 24, 1847. Upon viewing the land, he immediately confirmed the valley to be the new homeland of the Latter-day Saints. Within days, Young and his companions began building the future Salt Lake City at the foot of the Wasatch Mountains.

This land was not withing USA and still part of Mexico. So, one goal was achieved. I just wonder had Young's guides found Fish Lake or many other locations (Including California, Oregon, Washington) what would History now read...?

Not to High-Jack the Op but Religious Freedom seems to follow us back, as far as time itself and, lives even today.

Jagerdad :)

The road to Fish lake is called the Spanish trail cut off. When the travelers wanted to get out of the heat. They would travel this cut off into the mountains for the cool air and water. Kit Carson traveled there in 1848. Stopped at Twin creeks and with a Bayonet tied to a stick caught enough fish to feed those traveling with him. A lot of great history. Between 1853 and 1872 , Many people were killedin this area fighting for the rights to hunt and fish here. But in 1873 the Mormons made a treaty with the Ute Indians . Later buying the Indians water rights from the area for 9 horses,500 pounds of flour, 1 cow,a suit of clothing and the rights to Fish lake forever. There you go Jagerdad all little more history for you. Yes Elkantlers they started putting boats on the water this week. The Kokanee salmon run up that same Twin creeks that Kit Carson caught fish in. Kinda cool ?
