OK all Old Farts (Causing Global Warming) Since we are Hunters, lets see opinions. Old Beliefs or new notions on High Tech.

I have wondered (For Decades) about how much "I do not know", in regards to Oil for "Various" Vehicles and also, Oil Filters (Expensive High Tech & Great or, K-Mart/Walmart Oil Jugs + Filters..?).

So..!!!!...Since many of you ( including myself ) are as old as Oil, what is your knowledge on Oils & Filters..?

Regular, Synthetic or Blend...What Kind of Oil Do I Need?

Read the Link Below and reply (Please). Those who seldom enter any reply, here is YOUR open Door (Especially our New Members). I am really seeking a wide rage of quality answers and Please, those whom only write while holding a Sword, hang back, lay the Sword down and be; A Soft Old Fart in, "our Campfire" under an umbrella of a Decent, everyday, working guy, no $ yet, HE wants to keep his Truck(s) (and Family vehicle ok) running with no surprises an Oil & Filter, may cause...QUESTION

http://swiertire.com/blog/view/regular-synthetic-or-blend-what-kind-of-oil-do-i-need

PS: Question... ??? ...Eel, if you wish to start a Fire, do you use an automotive Oil or Kerosene, or BBQ Fluid or, does Fires simply Follow You. [ Hint, YOU should email me more often......or PHONE me Buddy] { Hence, this PS } ] . :) + Hugs 2U EEL

PSS: ELK, Oil may not be akin to Plumbing but I lean towards you knowing something about "Lubricants" :)

Jagerdad :)

RELH taught me, the hard way, that Kerosene is the best fire starter. I think Kerosene runs in his family blood lines (Hatfield). Plus it burns well in damp environments..... such as Shelter Cove.

I've always used conventional oil. Mostly because I'm cheap....and never drive over 55mph/2700rpm if I can help it.

Don't Really know for sure what's the Best?

Run a Couple of Engines 200,000 with Regular PENNZOIL 5W-20 and no Problems/No Oil burning on Either Engine!

Run another Engine 189,000 with MotorCraft 5W-20 Synthetic Blend & No Problems/No Oil Burning!

So Which is the Best?

I Don't Know?

Was the Synthetic Blend worth just a little More Money?

I'll Never know?

I Surely Wouldn't Run CHEAP Oil in anything!

Firm Believer in Oil/Filter Changes every 3,000 Miles on Gas Engines!

And Every 4,000 Miles on Diesel Engines!

I See Advertisement claiming you only need to change your Oil once a year with some of the New Full Synthetics!

I Ain't Doing that!

I've Run DELO 15-40 in a few Diesel Engines & Had Good Luck with it!

But at 10-30 Below Zero this Stuff is Thick & Stiff!

I Still Say during the Cold Months 10W-30 would be Easier on Diesel Engines!

The USCG does a ton of their own studies and as of last check, Mobil One synthetic was hands down the best. It will certainly allow more time between changes as it doesn't break down as quickly. Also a good filter is a must. It the cheap Fram. I ran my last straight six up to 200,000 miles and she never skipped a beat. The rest of the chevy fell apart but the motor was good.

Our state fleet cars get worked hard. All gas or all brake. Insane amount of idle time. Our current schedule is for synthetic blend and intervals of 7,500 miles. We run them up to 100,000 give or take and never heard of an engine problem so who knows.

I don't know about diesels. I change the oil and filter everything 3000 miles, or six months for a vehicle that doesn't get used much. Oil does break down, on the shelf, over time. Pay a few bucks more for a good filter. Get a high quality oil. If the vehicle has always had synthetic, continue with synthetic. If it has run oil, then my understanding is that you'll gain little to go to synthetic. Trust the manufacturer recommendations on weight and viscosity. Putting too heavy of an oil in your truck can do damage.

I'm a young fart but I just run 15-40 from Walmart year round and it seem to do fine. Change oil when ever I get a chance and I ain't working lol I say run what you want. Thanks

I have to maintain three trucks. Two personal and one company. My two personal don't get a lot of miles driven as a result of splitting the time between the two and most of my running around is done in the company truck. It may normally be 10 months before I need to change the oil in the personal trucks. I got myself into the habit of changing them weather they need it or not after 6 months. I have a diesel and two gas. The gas motors get a blend as per the manufacturer recommendations. I'm not sure what the dealer does with the diesel. The reason I do it at 6 months, is because I also detail them at those times. It's also a good time for other maintenance items like DEF, flush, tires rotate, fuel and air filters etc.

I don't know the best. Today I upgraded my 2005 Chevrolet with a 5.3 and 235000 due to oil pressure loss. I have always changed oil 3-4k miles 10-40 penz. Not sure if it is the oil or??? Now what to run in the Duramax?

Hey Rut!

15-40 DELO!

Don't Expect any Fantabulous Oil Pressure in the Dura-Max!

They Come Right out of the Factory with Low Oil Pressure!

Full synthetic is cheap enough nowadays there is no excuse to not use it. I run it an all my vehicles in a 5k interval, super easy to remember when to change without window stickers.

I have used Shaffer oil for years. My cummins has 416k and still doing great. The Shaffer has Molly in it. I send in samples and get reports back. I have went 17,500 miles between changes. It takes a few oil changes at lower miles till the engine gets coated with Molly. If you check into it you will use it.
