Eel

Did you go to the salmon and abalone meetings in Eureka for setting the new regs for this year?
They said they are shutting down the abalone diving in Shelter Cove this year. Doesn't make sense to me as there were more abalone last year than I have seen in the last 10 years.

Wow No abalone this year for me as that is the only place I dive for them.

It's true Mike. And it doesn't make sense to a lot of people. Here's all the legal malarkey:

I'm going crabbing tomorrow. I heard the crabs are filling out nicely. Have you been lately?

Yes I have been and you were right they are very sweet. I am going next week as the boys told me to come up before the ling and rock cod fishing closes.
They did get some nice Lings last week some in the 20 lb range so it would be nice to get some fresh fish before it closes.
I don't know what I am going to do with the Ab season closed. A lot of us just go up there for a week at a time to dive and eat ab's.

Eel don't you dare tell us how darn good those crabs taste. I use to do a lot of crabbing out of Florence, Oregon and we would have a big crab feed while there and have enough to bring home several pounds of crab meat.

I can't hardly being myself to read eel's post on these crab runs.

Not a lot of things I feel outright jealousy over, but catching and eating crabs is just about more than I can tolerate.

By gosh eel, this may yet come between us!!!!

Guys pay thousands to shoot a iiteybitty antelope. I'm about to do the same for a
few pounds of crab!!!

Id rather put out a thousand for a mess of fresh crabs, than a Calif hog!!

Nice catch rate Eel 20 per pot reminds me of last New Years Eve 10 of us went out on the Squirrel and got 100 crabs in less than an hour.

Then we went and brought back some clean ocean water and that big copper pot in the Cove and we cooked and ate crabs until we cooked all of them. Everyone was stopping by for an bite and some drinks it was great.

They still haven't opened the season up there for commercial as they haven't filled out enough. So the price is up to 10 or 11 bucks a pound. Better the way we do it, LOL

Are you fishing when you go out? we haven't been able to do that for a couple of years makes for a great trip on the ocean.

Hey Lumpy come on down and we'll fill you up 10 crabs a day 20 in possession 2 lings and 10 rock cod as well.

Might not be Mom's home cookin but us kali guys have to do it on our own. LOL

I don't know why 2Lumpy has to be so crabby all the time. :D

Mike, I don't do the rock fish/crab trips. It's a 25 mile run down to the Cape (rock fish grounds) and I don't do that well on the ocean. They do quite well though, when the ocean lays down enough to get down there. That's one big advantage to Shelter Cove. It's all right there at your back door.

I did crab at Trinidad once with the kayak this year and fished. One small keeper ling is all I caught. Something to do though, while my rings were soaking.

Everyone seems to think Jan. 15th will be the commercial opening. Maybe Jan. 1st.

We'll have to do a MonsterMuley hookup down at Shelter Cove some time. Overton said we can all stay at his place. Well, not in so many words, but I'm sure he won't mind. :D

Eel, Cuz will probably let you stay at his place at shelter cove on one conditional. You have to leave your matches and lighter at home.

Yes we will have to do that maybe we can get Lumpy to come down since he is looking for an area to get out of the snow.

Then we can send that crabby guy home with some crabs and fillets.

The ocean doesn't bother me at all I live the bobbing up and down. My son on the other hand has to take two sea sick pills to go out. Then he can drink his beer. LOL what we don't do for an beer.

I sold my place up there and just stay with buddies when I go now. I'm up at least 6 or 8 times a summer for fishing. Finally got my first halibut last year it was 70lbs and great eating. Can't wait for it open again it took twenty years to catch that fish. Lost a couple over the years, one that broke off 50lb test line.
