Need Help Picking Used SUV

My old faithful 1999 Jeep Cherokee finally bit the dust at 334 K miles this week and it's been 12 years since I car shopped. I am lost. Been Googling different searches trying to educate myself on what might be a good used replacement. Thought maybe someone here might have suggestions. I think the main thing I need to upgrade in the cargo capacity. My Jeep had 72 CF and for all my hunting gear I'd really like something around 90-100 CF. I'd just go get a used Grand Cherokee but I checked and the cargo capacity actually seems less at only 69 CF. I'd like a real SUV with armor plate fuel tank not a fake one like Ford Explorer. Only other preferences would be a 6 cylinder & 4 WD. Mileage maybe around 100,000. Just a good all purpose hunting rig for my solo trips. I live in a heavily populated suburban area so dealers & selection are plenty here. Any suggestions welcome.

Hey Zim!

The Good Old Cherokees are gone or so wore out it'd be a miracle to find another Low Mileage Unit!

Somebody has decided that 100% Automatic Tranny's is how it should be in the modern day World!

Lot's of Guys going to Toyota's because of that same BS!

I think you ought to go with a toyota since you seem to prefere Orientals:) Seriously, the 4Runner is a great vehicle.

Asians, not orientals. But it's funny you mention. My beater Jeep was the only thing my Chinese wife made fun of the last 4 years, and she has very low standards. She was thrilled when she herd my Jeep had expired! She will retire and be moving here in July. So this was due. She deserves A/C when accompanying me on my summer one week business trips. Guys on Bowsite also recommending the Toyota 4Runner so I'll go take a look at a couple nearby this evening. There?s quite a few used ones for sale in my area.

Just Think Zim!

With an Oriental Rig you could have your Oriental Chick work on it!:D

I got a new 4Runner trail edition. It has most everything that the TRD has. I got mine a year ago. But it is my wife's ride. I have taken it bird hunting a couple times. It is very capable off road truck.
I have two 4Runners. My first one was a 96. After owning that I knew I wanted another one but we got a Camery first. Then I gave that to my daughter and now I have my 16.

I can't get over how fugly the 4runner is. Nice rig I'm sure but that front end looks like a transformer screwed a rickshaw and had a baby.

Maybe a Tacoma with a shell would work for ya man

Bessy you need one with a shell on it or a four runner. Might be more comfortable sleeping arrangements. :)

Besides jeep, The 4-runner is pretty much the only mid-size SUV left that has 4 wheel drive no. (true 4WD with 4high and 4low)

I got a Jeep Grand Cherokee as a rental while my Expedition is being repaired. Got hit head on by a semi....doing about 4mph.

Anyway, it has a selector switch on the console, plus some sort of automatic 4wd if stuff gets iffy.

Crap, I used to drive a 64 Jeep pickup. To put it in 4WD, I had to use the crowbar (sometimes a huge flat blade screwdriver) with to turn two screws on each axle. Then use the floor shift.

Sorry doc!

Guess I Don't know much about the Grand Cherokee in the driveway!

Last one we had didn't have any controls at all for the 4X4!

LAST EDITED ON Jan-10-18 AT 05:46AM (MST)[p]Thanks all for your input. I hate shopping. That's for the wife. I ended up test driving four and bought a 2005 Toyota 4Runner. Had my mechanic look it over beforehand. If it holds up, it should suite my needs much better than my last rig.

Ya I found all four 4Runners on CarGurus.com and looked at Two as far as 20 miles away but this one was right across the street. CarGurus was a better deal though it was free. My wife cost me $120 on Match. ☺️ But she's still running fine after 5 years. Jury will be out a while on the Toyota.

Hehe she just turned 53 and could have retired last month but didn't want to leave her beloved high school mid year. So she asked if I'd mind if she stayed for the spring semester. Was fine with me. Dragged my feet on her green card but finally goter done. We are waiting now for the consulate to book her interview which will take place in Guangzhou Province. That is the final step.

Her 27 yo daughter actually beat her here by a full year! She is attending Eastern Michigan University going for her US masters degree teaching Mandarin. Dang she's smart. She is on the left. We were all ears yesterday listening to Trump?s proposed immigration changes, as her entire career would depend on winning in the lottery system he wants to get rid of. I suspect the change would benefit her.

I had a 2006 Nissan Xterra 4x4 Off Road until recently and it was awesome. I had to upgrade to be able to tow more. I was the most depressed new truck owner ever knowing I had to sell my Xterra! It's worth a look. Although, I like the new 4Runners now too...thinking about getting one of those for the wife...that way it's kinda mine too!

LAST EDITED ON Jun-07-18 AT 09:59PM (MST)[p]How is this truck working out for you, Ken? I'm thinking of getting one to replace my pickup.

>How is this truck working out

Actually it's great now but gotta warn you to make sure and do a compression test on both the cylinders and cooling system prior to purchase of an older used one. I ended up having quite an ordeal when it turned out the dealer tried to sell it to me with a leaky head gasket. My regular shop finally diagnosed it properly only after I had it a few weeks. I had to go back and file suit against the dealer to negotiate a settlement on the repair. They paid 2/3, me 1/3. I also had some parts replaced at the same time for material cost only. Was a pain but actually still turned out a good deal in the end, plus I got a one year warranty this way. After the fact, some research turned up the fact it is common for this model year 4Runner to have this head gasket failure. This was of course a major defect, but after it was fixed I love the vehicle. It has no other problems. Hopefully the motor will now last me. Would suck if the transmission failed now! Any other 4Runner owners have this head gasket issue?

The 96 had trouble with the Head gasket on the T100 and the 4runner. Toyota had a recall on them. They left it up to the dealership to either replace the gasket. Or Toyota would replace the engine. Mine got a new engine and is now at 300,000 miles. over 200,000 are on the "new" engine.
