Any of you that have built your own cabins or had them built by local guys. Would love to see pictures.
Hear any stories the good the bad and the ugly.
Got a couple of place(land) in SE Utah(Monticello) SW Utah (Cedar city) to build cabins on.

My current situation precludes me from caring about your opinion but go ahead and give voice to it anyway...

Drove most every nail and every screw myself. Had help on pour day(foundation wall only) and two guys so I didnt kink the roof steel. Hired the back hoe and well drilled. Other than that self made.

One of the greatest feelings on earth enjoying morning coffee listening to gobblers from the deck on a spring day

Nothing ugly about it unless you just do not like to do the work. Spent 5 months in a wall tent until dried in, second winter was interior work. Took about 10 months of work over two winters for the structure, the work on the lot is ongoing, and will be forever!

My father, brother and I bought a piece of land that borders National Forest in Western Wyo several years back and had a contractor complete the foundation, shell and roof for a cabin. We did the remaining work ourselves. We try to do a little each year. Still a few remaining finish items but for the most part its done. It does require a lot of upkeep. Fortunately I like that so I don't mind. My family lives the closest so we use it the most. We love it! I can hunt from my front step. As a matter of fact I took my bull this year after spotting him while drinking my morning coffee on the porch. Only thing I wish was that it was closer to fishing.

I'll start with the good.

What the contractor completed.

Our place is 10 acres. Its about half timber and half meadow. I keep a large area cleaned and mowed for both fire reasons and so friends can come up and put up a tent or a camper. Our cabin is not huge and we really like having our friends spend the weekends with us.

The bad!

I keep a trail camera on a game trail behind the cabin to see what is around. A lot of these guys hanging around the place lately. I would think more about it when my boys were younger but they are getting fairly savvy as they get older. I don't worry about it much any more.

The ugly!

The cabin is on the right side of the pic. The firefighters did an unreal job. The fire got to within a couple hundred feet but it was untouched. All the prior photos, except for the first one, are from after the fire. The Aspens are coming back great and the grass is incredibly thick in what was a sterile, beetle kill, mess. Far more deer and elk around the place than before the burn.

BigJohn,

Great place!

How does the SxS with tracks handle untracked snow? How deep of untracked snow can it reasonably handle? Great place

Great looking cabins guys.
When you post pictures of the cabin might be interesting to mention what state your in.

A lot more of the MM crew that I thought, Some outstanding cabins.
Keep them coming. Please

It does really well. I have been in snow so deep. When you step out of the razor. You sink to your butt. So the snow won't hold a mans weight but holds the razor up on tracks. We get 10 foot deep snow drifts in front of the cabin. Or and our cabin is in Utah.

They don't come much more humble than our little A-frame, never stop working on something up there.

The pickup looks almost as big as the cabin. :)

It's in a good place, about 35 minutes from my house, paved all weather road with in 200 feet, 9,000 ft elevation, warm, dry, rodent resistant, (unless a guest leaves the door open and a squirrel sneaks in) electric heat, $32 a month to keep the power on 365 days, no other fees.

20' x 24' with 2/3 loft, three beds, small fridge, stove, sink, couch, love seat, two living room chairs, kitchen table with four kitchen chairs, full bathroom with tub/shower.

Only down side, no water, hauling water is a pain in the butt.

Two years ago a wild fire burnt up to the foundation on three sides, but found no fuel, only dry grass, which burned out quick, before the old shake shingles ignited. Lucky...... other cabin near ours burnt to the ground.

Purchased it already built, (owned it for 18 years this spring, it's over 40 years old and needs sheet metal roofing put over the old shake shingles) so it doesn't fit the original criteria, but it's an example of what can be done on a budget and still be dry, warm, comfortable, and big enough for who it's for.

All the best on your project Gator!

Very nice lumpy ! You need to show the work in progress part. ;-) So it's still be built, but isn't everything a work in progress.I have never driven down to the front of it. So that is the first time I have really seen the front. It looks bigger from the road. Do the boys stay there when they are hunting ?

If you build a log home I recommend you either put up the logs yourself or be there when the contractor does. We had a contractor do the foundation and put up the logs, he missed drilling several log for outlets and switches. Took forever to run the wiring.

Will do that.
Been Looking at a couple of log Kits from Pioneer Log on KSL
I build metal cabins, BUT I'm in love with having a wood one if I can swing it.

Being a plumbing heating and air contractor and a General contractor. Run your vents up as high as you can so you don't have to deal with this. http://www.monstermuleys.info/photos/user_photos_2017/8452079a33d11741c45368a53bded4024f925.jpeg
I do this when I plumb a cabin. I have to fix this ever few years. This is the south side of the cabin so not as bad as the north side. Also our logs where painted. I wish they had used the log stains. That way we could just add a new coat every few years. We tried to get someone up on the mountain to sand blast the paint off. But could never get anyone up there to do this. So we just repainted. The walk out basement is nice. All of my pipes are excessable. Easy to drain and winterize. Also I can store water in the basement for the winter. It does freeze a inch or so but still usable. We also use solar and propane power. Luckily we have water rights for our water. If you have more questions as you get close let me know. I would love to help.

Who Plumbed that BIGJOHN?:D

Yes!

Plumbing Vents about a foot down from the Crown!

Or Horizontal out one of the Ends of the House/Cabin & as High as Possible!

In Extreme conditions where there's lots of Ice & Snow I've Run Schedule 40 Galvanized Pipe up for the Vents on Cabins!

Mother Nature can be Crude!:D

2 Satellite Dishes BIGJOHN?

You Guys must Be RUFFIN IT at the Cabin!:D:D:D

BigJohnT,

I have a similar issue with the vent stack. The snow load has not pulled the stack down but it has pulled the boot back. I did the plumbing and just ran the vent stacks straight up. I didn't give it too much thought. We have a 12:12 pitch on the metal roof and it sheds snow very well. But getting the stack vent boot to seal up correctly on a metal roof with those damn ridges is a butt kicker.

Gator,

We went with log siding rather than actual logs. Its not quite the same as full logs but it made the work considerably easier.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-11-18 AT 01:15PM (MST)[p]Yes we are roughing it at the cabin. Off the grid no power no water. One dish is HD tv the other is Satellite internet. No cell service there. Kind of getting sick of the kids on the internet. So the snow may knock that off this year. :) When are you coming up Bessy ? No Plumber plumbed our cabin.I can guarantee that. Ace hardware stickers on every fitting.

Watch out, if you invite Eel, make sure he leaves his matches at home. My Cuz used to have a nice cabin at Shelter Cove until Eel burned it down.

Let me make a quick call to my agent and I'll get a formal invitation in the mail. Been wanting to meet eel for a couple years now and you all know how I like to leverage travel overhead.

BigJohn, you got any structures you need to upgrade............ hunt when the ducks are flying.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-11-18 AT 09:53PM (MST)[p]BJT, the boys stay it on some hunts, they have other options, one son lives in Loa........ they have running water in Loa. :) And by elk/deer rifle hunting season dates, I have drained mine. We usually just haul drinking water in for the hunts. And......... we haven't hunted the Fish Lake for many years now, accept to assist friends.

Still..... best investment I ever made. It goes up in value every day, whether I'm in it or not. They're not making any new small building lots up there anymore. ;-)

I'm a Metal guy so we are thinking metal frame with 1/2 log side if we can't do a deal with a log cabin kit.

One of the longest term favors you will do yourself is make all the supply lines drainable with a simple boiler drain at the low point. When you leave you just open them and burp the system and eliminate having to keep the cabin heated when you are not there.

A cup of windshield fluid in each "P" trap and you are good to leave.

If you plumb with PEX it is easy to get your slope.

In 2007, I had the crazy idea that I wanted to build a cabin by hand. I did not want a kit (nothing against kits) but decided to peel the logs by hand, pin the logs, mix the mortar (chinking) and do that myself. First off, I attended this class:
buildloghomes.org

Finally, 3 years later I got started. My goal was to finish in a year. I did sub several parts of the build out (framing, plumbing, electrical, and cement). The plumbing was exceptional due to a MM legend.

My 1 year plan turned out be 4 years. I spent more money than I thought. However, I really liked how it turned out (I like rustic). I then (reluctantly decided to sell it a year back)

It was a lot of work. I am not sure who was happier to see it completed- me, or my wife.

Yeah, I remember that day! You called me early that morning and said I had to trim some logs. I was sicker than a dog.
Not a lot of fun running that chainsaw at below 0 weather. But we got it done!

And your vent advice, like on the earlier post, saved us some problems!!

Great post! You guys have some really nice high country cabins.

Thought I might throw my low country cabin in the mix. Southern Utah.

I got this place mostly finished, all though I have done a lot of work to it over the years.

Here is a 360 view through the seasons,, with one photo of the grand kids playing in the front yard thrown in just because that is what it is really all about for me.

The only thing I get is repeat boxes that show as below:

I know many folks use Photo Bucket yet I did research and found Photo Bucket has a very Strong Tracking software and retains the History of all ISP's and computers that open or receive one of their pictures as email or in/on forums.

Most of us do not care if some major company tracks our key strokes or learns of us via identifiable (Individual Computers, which includes cell phones and tracking each of them) yet, I simply rather block such Data-Bits. The issue is if they track me, they track all of my Family due to Accounts. Its complicated but, there is my little reply.

Wish I could see the pictures but I simply can not allow Photo Bucket to do its thing.

Jagerdad

I get the same thing and photo bucket can go elsewhere as my firewall blocks them also.

RELH

I recently purchased a new computer and started using Google Chrome instead of Google and these Photobucket photos were being blocked.

I downloaded a free patch from Google store and they work now.

Same here.

Sorry about the photos. Come to find out that photobucket now charges to direct link photos to web sites.Try clicking on this link and hope fully you can see the photos.

All the photos were taken from the property or looking back at the property.

I'm afraid I don't know much about all that being spied on by the web stuff. If they are looking at me I'm sure they will get bored pretty quick.

Those are some great shots. Awesome stuff.
Like the ones of the view you got from a far.
