In the city I live in (Fresno) we have lots of homeless drug addicts/schizos/kids who don't want to work, and I usually brush them off when approached for money. Call me pitiless, I don't care.

Today a gentleman in his early sixties I assume; clean jeans, clean but worn merrells and a white trimmed beard approached and said he was stuck down here after he brought his kid to visit one of the colleges. I did notice a pickup with Oregon plates and he said he needed gas for the trip home. I gave him $20, which is really out of character for me, and he walked away.

Here's the thing that bothered me. He had an awesome brass belt buckle with a flintlock pistol on it! I noticed it immediately and I instantly thought, "gun guy". So yeah, I reversed discriminated against him cause I thought he was one of us! By us I mean someone in the gun culture.

Dang, I must be getting soft in my old age!!!

Then again, I told my wife that if I see the same guy in the parking lot six months from now I was going to tell him off.

Eel... Is that how the saga of Shelter Cove began...? Have matchbook, will travel..? Asking for any spare kerosene/gas $$$ from Folks...?

Manny, you should have been Home casting 41 Bullets.....Maybe put a link up showing folks what you have been doing with my old Western Iron.

Jagerdad :)

I agree with eel....... imagine that....... you did the right thing.

I pass judgement at intersections, street corners, sidewalks etc almost every time I'm in the city, most often I decline their request but are occasions when someone looks legit. I used to hitch hike to get from my home to where I worked, 180 miles away from my home,...... young, no car, saving money to go to college, I think I was legit in putting my thumb out or asking a trucker at a gas station for a ride.

There were times, in my younger years where I traveled 900 miles to go from home to colllege, in a worn out old wreck of a car and just enough cash for gas to get there, if something had gone wrong like a starter going out or a battery dying, I would have been that guy in the parking lot.

I'm sure there are times I've judged poorly but I'd rather be wrong than refusing someone that really did need a few bucks, to get home etc. I can live with that easier than I can otherwise.

Heres my question...hows a Dad who is bringing his son out of town to look at colleges going to put his son through college if he is asking for gas money? I have 2 kids in college. 1 we pay for and 1 on a scholarship for softball. The one on scholarship has most everything paid for due to scholarship/financial aid and such but it still costs us money every semester. That guy was pulling your chain MannyCa. Sorry...but it was a nice gesture on your part. The important thing is that you felt good about it.
