Vault door question

I need to get another safe. But, I gotta ask all the smart folks on this site if it is practical to place a vault door in place of a regular door?

I can easily widen the opening enough, but don't wanna get caught up in something unforeseen.

What say all you smart folks?? How could I go about doing this?

I think you need a structural engineer

It's depleted uranium drywall dickweed.

My wife replaced her bedroom door with a vault door. I don't have the combination either. Oh well.

I agree. However, this was designed as a panic room. Drywall is there, but on top of engineered wall.

Nice try, and thanks so much for your help.

I also have some 1/4" plate for additional support. The vault door I have in mind is about 1/2 " wider than frame of door.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-19-18 AT 10:25AM (MST)[p]Just an inch out of the concrete wall shouldn't be an issue. Shouldn't need an engineer or any reinforcement. You'd be surprised how many people I've talked out of putting a vault door on a typical drywall 2x4 wall.

What is it for? Just a safe place to store valuables? Will you use it as an environmental safe place like in the mid-west? I'm just curious. How big is the room?

The door size is irrelevant, your more interested in the RO ( rough opening) your door maybe 1/2" wider but the vault door jambs may be 2" wider ea. requiring a RO. 4" wider. Pm me if needed.

In this case I think a metal door with a good lock will be just as efficient as vault door.

It can be compared to locking a cardboard box with a deadbolt. You wont get the worth out of the vault door or the deadbolt.

hi feddoc
What brand door do you have? I installed a Fort Knox swing in door under my front porch. It was accessed though my finished basement. It was 6? x18? x 9? ceiling , 6 sides of concrete.
That door weighed around 1,000 lbs or better. I also had 6? HVAC run and a land line phone just in case you got locked in. I could never mustard up the nerve to lock it behind me. LOL. Mine was built as a fire proof/panic room.

If you have any questions just give me a shout out
