I was saddened to hear that Pat F. passed away in April. His books were quite appropriate reading during campouts and hunting trips with the rare clean humor missing these days.

Sad to hear. I've never laughed so hard reading his books. The grasshopper trap and my first deer and welcome to it were some of the funniest stories I've ever read. There?s a bunch of others also.

I was reading the Grasshopper trap and my wife came in from another room to ask why I was laughing so hard! He will be missed!

Grew up reading everything he wrote still have several books in my library. Going to have to turn my son on to them. Gonna miss you Pat!

One of my favorite stories was about the time He went incognito at midnight looking for some "sausage gravy." I re-tell this one each and every year at elk camp in Colorado.

Oh ya, "The night the bear ate goomba" is hilarious too. I think that's what it's called. He had a knack for telling stories that made you feel you were right there seeing it for yourself.

LAST EDITED ON May-09-18 AT 07:05PM (MST)[p]Wow--I didn't know he passed away. Now I'm going to go pull out my collection and reread it all again. I don't think it's even possible for me to laugh as hard this time as I did the first time, but it's going to fun testing my theory. One of my all time favorites was about a gaseous old hound in the backseat while young Pat was on a date with his first love...

And another old OWAA acquaintance sadly goes "ashes to ashes, dust to dust."

McManus -- a one of kind -- was as funny in person as was his writing. Right behind me on a bookshelf sits an autographed copy of ?They Shoot Canoes, Don?t They?? He gave it to me at an Outdoor Life function at a SHOT show in the 1980s.

Pat wasn't too much older than I am, if I recall. That fact reminds me that my time to meet the maker probably isn't too far off.

How To Hunt Coues Deer

I still refer to those little green shavers as "grub scouts" when they appear at my door. Thanks, Mc Manus.
