LAST EDITED ON Oct-04-18 AT 09:56PM (MST)[p]I haven't backpack hunted without packing in extra drinking water and its extremely heavy. This year I have a good running spring about 2 miles up the mountain and plan to camp nearby.

How do you judge the source of the water and does it always need to be treated before drinking?

I would use the water from the spigot and not the trough. How would you treat this water source?

In the old days we drank water from off the mountain all of the time. We had some springs with pipes on them. We would fill up our trailers even. But now a days with the small filters that purify water. I would say carry the filter. Pump the water threw it and don't take a chance getting sick. Although our cabin is spring feed. We drink the water all year. We have taken it to town and had it tested. It's pure every year. But it never sees the light of day and animals can't get to the source.

Not Sayin it Ain't Good Water!

But I'd Be Damn Careful!

Beaver Fever Sucks!

When I Was Younger you could Drink the Water just about anywhere on the Mountains!

That hasn't been the case for many years!

What Animals Have Not Contaminated!

Filthy F'N humans Have!

Pure Water like BIGJOHN has is Quite a Valuable in today's World!

I've got a Fresh Water Story for you:

Around here before the Culinary Water came around everybody had Wells!

A Guy Called & said He'd Lost his water to his House!

I Shoveled around for a few hours & located the Old Hand Dug Well!

The Top was covered with wood that was all Rotten!

At First I wasn't sure rather it was the Water Well or the Septic Tank!

Got it Exposed and there Was Dead Mice 5"-6" Thick on top of the Water!

Anywhere from freshly Dead to completely Decomposed!

The Guy that lived there came out of the House & Said:

That Ain't The Water I've been Drinking is it?

Small filter or a few drops of Clorox could save you from a sore sphincter and a gut ache in the back country.

saddling up anyway."

I use Katadyn hiker pro filter. Weighs about a pound but great for piece of mind. Drank filtered pond water this year on mzzle deer hunt at 80*. Still tasted like pond so i put a little Emergen-C in it. Have been using this filter for 10 yrs and worth its weight in gold. I drink a ton of water on hunts, not yet been cramped or hurtin from dehydration. Think it was about $80, may have been rebranded as some other name by now. Good luck I would not drink anything unfiltered.

Thanks for the replies. The filters that I've looked at say they dont remove viruses. T
It seems that you have to use the pills or drops in order to remove viruses. What do you think the real threats are with this water source?

Around here you are worried about bacteria (not viruses). To filter out viruses you need a water purifier which filters down to crazy small and also clogs up quick. All you need is a water filter that will filter down to bacteria size. Don't worry about viruses.

You're a backpacker and you don't already have a filter?

you've been packing in water???? I've had to pack water from a souce to camp before but never all the way from the trailhead.

If you use a filter on that trough water, there will be no threat.

I would filter the spigot water too.

When I'm backpacking and on the go I use a MSR Miniworks.

If you're hunting out of a base camp, this is what you want.

Fill that thing up from that trough or spigot and then hang it from a tree branch in your camp.

Packing water, That's funny.

Well, there are places that have no water, good or bad. You either pack it in or do without.

I'm still old school. I've been hunting the same places from the 60's and there are a couple springs coming out of the ground with pipes and I fill my water jugs up if I'm in the area. I love that cold water.

I'll be packin 2 cases of bottled water on my mule this week. I wouldn't be afraid to drink water out of that spigot right after I filtered it. As smacked said, the Hershey squirts ain't any fun!

Stop with the dildo virtue signaling. You have zero reason to suspect he has no intention to pack out his trash other than some bizzare superiority complex you have. Consider this a cyber b itch slap for being a b itch. Go on now and tell the rest of us hicks to pack out our poo too.
