My grandson finally collected his first CA. deer. He used a 30-06 rifle that I built for him and made a perfect shot while hunting with his father near Downeville, CA.
They only saw this one buck, a fork horn, but with a good size body. Possible blacktail-mule deer cross. On a previous deer hunt last year he had to eat tag soup. I think the kid is now hooked on hunting.

Good for him.

Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. "

Congratulations too both of you!

Kilbuc, he did break in his "Hatfield" knife. His father gave him good instructions on field dressing and skinning out a deer.

BIGJOHNT, if he did the kid knows where he can get another one and he will not be bashful about asking for it. His Father left a tactical knife I made him in a marijuana field that his team raided. He was not a bit bashful about asking me to make him another one. Freebie of course.

Congrats to your son and grandson. They have good roots. A big bodied deer for sure. The highlight of any of my harvests is breaking out my Hatfield knife.

Eel, I have to disagree with you. The highlight is not breaking out the knife to dress out the deer. The highlight is sitting down at the table enjoying some venison backstrap steaks.
Yeah, you guessed it, I am more of a meat hunter then a trophy hunter. Big horns are a bonus, but my wife told me that you can not eat the horns. Too darn tough.
