ND in Montana

LAST EDITED ON Dec-13-18 AT 06:06PM (MST)[p].....there is no such thing as an accidental discharge, there are only negligent discharges.....

...as in "ND"

That'd Be a Tough one Right There!

I Guess My Question would Be This:

He Was Fairly Confident the Bull He Shot was Dead & He Un-Loaded His Gun!

Was they gonna Double Up on the Smaller Bull?

Stay Safe Everybody!

It has taken me some time to watch this and then, once I saw two men write as they had (Homer & Elk) I shall bite my keyboard until I might be Civil and, offer typed words that may do justice, to the man's Nobel Post and Video Explanation.

Jagerdad :-(

For any time saved my keeping it locked and loaded, I'm not sure it's worth it when hiking close to someone else. Pretty big price to pay for a mistake easily avoided. That would be a hell of a burden to live with.

When I was a kid my Dad and I were hunting rabbits. I was using an over and under (.22 on top and a 20 gauge shotgun on bottom). I was young and was cocking the hammer back and releasing it slowly back into the uncocked, resting position. The selector was on the shotgun pin and the hammer accidentally slipped from my right thumb sending the firing pin into that shotgun primer. It scared the hell out of me. Luckily, my Dad was walking on my right instead of my left. I think about that quite a bit and realize that negligence does happen and mistakes are made. I never hunt with a round in the chamber. I can't imagine what that guy will go through for the rest of his life. Tragic...

...so I'm wrong jagerdad???

Well!

I Said:

"That would be a Tough Deal Right There"!

I Think if We were All Truthful we could Think of a few Close Calls We Don't like to Talk about!

A Good Friend of Mine who is More Petrified of Loaded Guns in a Vehicle than almost Me!

Him & another Friend go to their Private Range every Fall & Make sure their Guns are Still On!

They get in the Truck after shooting and to leave!

My Friend that's terrified of loaded Guns in the Vehicle asks:

Is Your Gun Unloaded?

Sure is the other Friend Replies!

My Good Friend reaches over & Makes Sure!

(Pulls the F'N Trigger!)

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!

Thank God the Barrel was pointed down!

Cost Him a 350 Chevy Engine that day!

Way Better than other options though!

--------------------------------------------------------

When Hiking/Hunting with anybody with one Guy in front of the other it is Mandatory when you're with Me that Both Guns are Empty in the Pipe!

I've seen things get WESTERN many a times & it's always been when other Hunters were Shooting at Game!

You don't see it often!

But when I see a vehicle with a Bullet Hole in it,it just makes you Wonder what the Story is?

We Had a Local here that had several Bullet Holes in His old Huntin Truck!

On Close Inspection I take it he had a few Enemies!

Some were entering the Truck & Some were Exiting!

Can't Imagine what that Truck would say if it could Talk!

You can't be too Safe with a Gun!

Just for starters, you're right elkassassin. If my partner shoots a bull and then loads his gun when I'm getting ready to shoot mine, I'd say "WTF are you doing????" That's just for starters.

I usually hunt with one in the chamber when I'm by myself. As soon as another person is side-by-side with me, I end up emptying the chamber. I've noticed that all I think about when close to someone is muzzle discipline and safety rather than keeping focus on spotting game and hunting.

Yes Homer you are wrong on this one.

I have seen negligent discharges and you make a very good point regarding that. However one time while guiding my very first antelope hunter I saw a true accidental discharge. The client had shot and dropped an antelope. We approached the antelope and when we were close I realized the buck was down but alive. I instructed the client to shoot the antelope again. Before I had even closed my mouth the rifle went off. I about 5hit myself. I asked him, "what the ---- was that"? he claimed the weapon went off when he closed the bolt. I asked him to chamber another round. When he locked the bolt, AND I WAS WATCHING, the weapon fired. We immediately started hiking back to the truck where I had an extra weapon. I instructed client he should not try and use that weapon at all until it was cleared fixed by a competent gunsmith. When we returned with the other rifle the goat was put down and everything worked out okay. This is the only mechanical AD I have ever witnessed personally. Because the client was observing good safety rules when it occurred no one was injured. The weapon was pointed in a safe direction when the discharge occurred.

Most hunters I know have witnessed a ND and a few have witnessed an actual AD. Our main gun safety rules are designed to make sure an injury does not occur when either an ND or AD does happen.

Both ND and AD are usually great learning moments for experienced and often complacent marksmen.

It's always bugged me to see people holding their guns as he described he was. Especially with his friend in front of him. I walk with one in the chamber on safety, I check my safety often and pay attention to the muzzle always always always.

When I first saw this post I was afraid to open. But I broke down and watched the video. I was worried it was auctual footage of the shooting. For others it is not. But I feel bad for the fellow shooting his buddy. For this very reason I have always taught my boys to hike with a empty chamber. It only takes a fraction of a second to chamber a round. Not worth having to live with what this guy has to. Even after shooting my Bison a couple of years ago with Taylor Albrecht. As we walk up to my bull. He and another guy asked me do you have a round in ? I had already unloaded the gun. The bull was lying on the ground stiff legged . I said that bull is dead ! If I need to put another roundin I can rack the bolt know problem. I guess those two have seen Bison jump up and they are tough to kill. But I saw no need watching the bull for 10 to 15 minutes in that open country. Better to be safe then sorry. Be careful out there guys and enjoy the great outdoors!

Honestly Eelgrass I don't know what caused the malfunction. I am not extremely knowledgeable on that make of weapon. The weapon itself was a Weatherby with a synthetic stock. It was not an old weapon and looked reasonably new to me. If I remember correctly it was chambered in .270 WBY MAG. The client still uses me for taxidermy. I can try and give him a call to figure out what ended up being found in the weapon when he took it to the gunsmith and what has happened sense. I know the weapon performed when we checked the zero on it when he arrived for the hunt. I know the weapon performed when he took the initial shot on the antelope. I know the two discharges after the initial shot were true mechanical AD with nothing contacting the trigger.

I will try and call him and see if I can get you better answers.

Eel, I have an older Savage single shot bull barrel .220 that I put a new trigger in back in 91. It was a bit light from the facory....light enough that I was a bit concerned. So I tightened it a bit. Apparently not enough as the gun fired as I closed the bolt. Luckily, a round was not in the chamber.

Upon further inspection, I could not tell what was wrong. So. I removed it and installed another, set at just under 1lb. Never an issue.

This happened where I live. John is the Dad who was clearing the gun. He had his 2 sons with him who were in the cab of the truck. Imagine how he feels. No more than a couple years later, John was in the chute helping run a rodeo and he was knocked into a gate by a bull and was paralyzed from the waist down. That family has been hit hard with tragedy. It is a tragedy...

Anybody setting a Trigger under 2 lbs is asking for trouble!

Let alone just under 1 lb!
