"disabled veteran needs some help hunting this week"

LAST EDITED ON Sep-19-16 AT 09:40 PM (MST)

Some of you may have seen my post on UWN but thought I would post it here as well.

As some of you know, due to a disability from my service in the Army I get an early hunt extension that coincides with the youth hunt. On Friday we hiked back into the area I usually hunt to look around and eventually bumped a lone spike about 30 yards off the trail, I typically can see an entire herd in there this time of year. After glassing a bit we discovered the likely culprit, someone had been driving a side by side up the mountain where it is illegal to do so, go figure. We glassed until dark and hiked back to where we set up camp on a ridge where we could glass across several canyons, Saturday we got up early and didn't see or hear anything, nor did the guys with horses ever push anything out as we watched them cover a lot of ground. While glassing Saturday we saw the same side by side along with a second one parked on the trail and really wonder if someone was extending their archery hunt via the full moon, soon as the guys on horses came through the side by sides boogied out of there pretty quickly like they didn't want to be caught doing something. At around 10am we decided to pack up and hike out to go check out another area about 15 miles east of there, when we pulled up to the trail head a family with a youth hunter had just finished up with packing out a small bull so we were hopeful, we covered about 5 miles but didn't see or hear anything so we called it a night and hiked out with the full moon lighting the trail. I strongly feel that the full moon and warm temps had some affect on the elk but other factors definitely did not help.

At the moment I am nursing a nasty blister but will be ready to go out again tomorrow or Wednesday. What I need is someone who is free midweek to go back up there with me, we are supposed to have some cooler and wetter weather coming in that will help a lot, combine that with the full moon phase changing and I think the odds of a midweek bull are pretty good. My only request is that you are a capable hiker and experienced with quartering and packing out an elk. And if you have any other ideas I am certainly open to them. Feel free to PM me if you are available, I can help with food(elk steaks) and fuel but by no means have the option of hiring a guide. And a huge thank you to Adam for helping this last weekend, great guy to hunt with.

There are several spots I hunt on the South slope east of Kamas that have been successful before, open to suggestions if you have something in mind. PM me your number if you are up for a fun but wet time in the woods, I think with this weather moving in they will be very active the next few days. I have my stuff packed up and ready to head out soon, we live in Bountiful.
