This is my first story on MM and haven't signed in for some time.
Thursday night finally rolls around having the trailer all loaded up and began the trek to the good area of Current Creek. I have always hunted cow and spike up there. Mostly focused on cows because we can usually always fill our tags with cows. This year we were after the all mighty spike. My girlfriend (who has never hunted or been around hunting) and I pull the trailer up to the top where we would set up camp. We always camp in the same camp site on top because at night you hear elk talking. Friday morning we wake up and here an elk bugling not to far. I grab my cow call and start making a few calls and he talked back a few times and then moved on. Friday was just fun to hang out, veg and talk hunting stories of the past. My brother and his best friend arrive later that night to enjoy the pleasures of camping and hunting. For us hunting is a family event and truly just a relaxing enjoyable time. We eat dinner and get ready for the morning fun. As always the night before the hunt no sleep. Just laying there thinking of all the past hunts waiting for the morning to come. Sunrise could not come soon enough. Around 5 am one four wheeler after another drive by the camp. Finally around 6 am finally get up dress get breakfast cooked and make the short drive to where we will begin our hike in. At 7 am we start walking in to the place we always hunt and about 7:15 opening morning we hear two gun shoots not to far from us. We know the elk will be coming to us as they do almost every year. The blood starts to pump fasting knowing that they are close by. We cross through one more drainage to the east of us. At 7:25 there they are. I drop to my knee get a good clean look at the elk walking through the trees. I put a bullet in the ready to pull the trigger at the all mighty Spike. I see the tallest spike i have ever seen. Probably close to 3 feet tall. Not able to get a clean shot i wait patiently. My heart beat is beating faster and faster. Watching cow after cow walk through my scope. My good friend Josh is sitting next to me looking at the 50 plus elk. He is whispering cow, cow, cow, cow, cow, then the next two are cows. He then says the next one coming behind the pine is a spike. I hold steady waiting for him to come around the pine tree. There he was seeing it through the cross hairs getting a perfect look at the spike and i gently squeeze the trigger. The elk tipped right over. Did not take a step. I saw him drop in my scope and couldn't believe. At 7:30 AM the tag was filled. We sat there a few minutes looking at all the other elk. Two big bulls scoring in the 350's were screaming trying to get all of their cows together. We watched them as they moved into the next drainage and went to go look at the trophy.
To me the trophy is not the size of the rack. Its the whole hunt. Being there with my brother, his best friend Josh, and my new girl made the hunt amazing. Go him all dressed out and packed out and back to camp at noon for lunch.
Turned out to be one of the best if not the best hunt ever. Good friends having an amazing time made this one of the best ever. To me its not the size of the antlers.
friday before the hunt.
Took the orange vest off to start cleaning the elk when the girl said we need pics. LOL...
