I have been hunting the Utah General season elk for the past decade or so and it is finally starting to come together. In the last three years I have been able to take two good bulls. This year was very special as I had my oldest boy with me, it was a lot of work and it took two days to get the bull out but it was well worth it!

Looks like your boy is more excited than you!!!remember many moons ago doing that with my Dad and Granddad...enjoy the moment they last forever..

It really was a great experience. My hunting partner called the bull into within 70 yards in the thick trees, I let him shoot first and when the elk was still standing after his shot I had a small opening in the trees and could see the bulls head and neck, so I put the crosshairs on his neck and puled the trigger. When we got to the bull the only hole was from my neck shot. Looking back up the hill from where we had shot we could see a tree with a large hole in it from where my buddies 338 had punched through it.
This is the first big game animal my son and I have harvested together. I can't wait until he is the hunter and I am the pack horse.
I have a different vest for him but forgot it at home so he had to use the backup vest, but it gives him room to grow ha ha.

So you say you have been at it for a decade, did it take you that long to learn how to hunt elk or did it take that long to figure it all out and find them?
Great Bull and even better steaks, elk is good with anything

It has taken that long to really find and figure them out, I have harvested several elk over the years but the past 3 have been great. So I would say it took 6 or 7 years to really start getting into elk regularly on the general season hunt. I completely understand why people are so secretive when it comes to the general hunt.
