Wy elk unit help

I have 7 NR elk preference points for Wyoming. Looking for opinions/suggestions/advice on which unit I should put in for.

I have not done any elk hunting in wy. Mostly antelope in 99/95 and region G deer

I would be happy with a 350 class bull. I live in Utah and have all options available with pack horses, canvas tent, camper, atv's...ect. so i want to avoid the wilderness areas with guided hunt requirements.

I am leaning heavily towards area 38 and using horses to pack in.

Thoughts?

Also in wy if I dont draw 1st choice but i draw 2nd choice does that use up my prefernce points?

I'd be happy with a 350 bull too...

2nd choice doesn't use a pp.

Since you mentioned score, the NW corner still produces the biggest bulls.

7 pp gets you into the medium tier areas, but not the top areas.

Probably have to wait a while for a better unit, 350 is a tough bull to get in any state.
But
Some WY bulls can give UT a run..

That's a hell of a bull.

I agree with what's been said,350 is a pretty tall order. with 7 points your chances are slim unless you're super lucky.

I have 7 also so I can't even put in for the late Cody hunts I want. I don't know what to tell you besides good luck.

"I'd be happy with a 350" bull".

Well... DUH!

Most guys, like more than half of all elk hunters, don't realize how big a bull truly has to be to score an honest 350". It's one thing too see pictures of a 350" class bull. Another thing entirely to hold a set of those antlers in your hands.

I've done a lot of elk hunting and in most units I'd be damned happy with a 330" bull. Damned happy.

+1. 350 is a BIG bull. Not many people have killed an honest 350" bull. There are 2 or 3 units in Wyoming where you can realistically expect a chance at a bull like that on public land - if the weather is right. You won't draw those units without max points. If you're willing to spend some $$ there are some big ranches in the second tier units (like Q creek) where with a bit of luck and patience you could kill a bull like that. I understand that there are 350 inch bulls killed in general units every year. What I'm talking about is a realistic opportunity. GOOD LUCK. Chip

If youd be happy with a 300" bull...then you have options..but if your gonna be picky and want a "realistic" chance at 350..you might as well keep saving for years to try and get a late season hunt, or go guided in the wilderness. . Like said above, 350+ come out of general tag units every year plenty. I was hunting a bull that was touching the 400 class this season on a national forest general tag area, but he won the battle during archery and I couldnt find him in rifle. But im a resident and am not limited by when and where I can hunt. Good luck in your choice, but you might want to drop your standards if you want to just have a good hunt and chase elk and not worry about inches as much.

Yep, it takes a pretty special bull to break 350".
Here's my daughters bull that does break 350.
