Recording Elk Bugles

LAST EDITED ON Feb-14-17 AT 12:09PM (MST)[p]Hi all,

Maybe you could help me with this. I want to record elk bugles for a couple weeks in September prior to my elk hunt. I hunt big country and it would be really useful to know which ridges/basins they are using. I would like to have 3 set up.

I would like something cheaper than a trail camera and perhaps with better audio capability to capture bugles up to 1/2 mile to a 1 mile off.

I would like to have a way of knowing when it happened, either a time stamp or just from guessing when it is during the recording. Ideally, I could review it in the field.

I could use a simple recorder but I'm not sure it would be able to capture far-away sounds or handle a few weeks of data.

It seems like there has to be a product for this, but I haven't found one.

Thank you!

Interesting idea. I can't think of anything that would work that could get you the time you want out of it unless you had some way to recharge on site. If you are really techy, you could try and incorporate some baby monitor technology that triggers with sound with a quality recording device to save on battery and memory usage. It won't be cheaper than a trail cam though. You could also spend some nights up on the hill just before the season.

I could take you to a place that would where out your recorder the first two weeks of October.
