I'm pretty certain I'm going to draw my San Juan elk tag this year. Have any of you hunted it during the archery season in the past? Any pointers you could pass along? Feel free to pm me if you'd like. Thanks

Talk with Bessy. Let's know if you draw !!!

I've got 19 points and was putting in for this hunt and was real close to drawing so I went down with Bess brother and hunted with him. He got screwed 2 or 3 times that year from spike hunters. The problem is there is no limit on how many spike tags they sale. So every body that has a deer tag brings 3 or 4 buddy's with them and they all have spike tags. The worst guys buy a tag, grab there bugle and there video camera. The last time I went to San-Jaun with Bess there were 40-50 guys running around with spike tags and every time we we're moving in on a big bull some spike hunter would show up blowing his bugle or cow call and scare the bull off.So I quit putting in down there.I hope you have a lot better luck than we did. The DWR ruined that hunt with there spike hunt. Good luck

If you don't mind me asking, how much experience and time do you have on the unit? If you have considered a guide I would recommend BTO, they really know that unit! I have spent some time down there during the archery hunt, never hunting though, just scouting. Most my time there has been during the rifle and muzzleloader seasons. You will see bulls from the typical places, but as mentioned you will have to contend with spike hunters. The unit is HUGE though, you should be able to get some space to yourself. I have seen elk in places that you would not expect to find elk down there. Amazing place! Hope you draw!

Here is a link to just 1 morning down there a couple years back during muzzy hunt--

The Black crew do a pretty good job on that Mountain. They find some huge bulls.

I helped a friend on a muzzy hunt in unit 61 (Colorado) this fall and we had an amazing time getting into bugling bulls.

But THAT.....was frigin EPIC!

Wow....lucky guys to get to experience that.

Congrats

Thanks for linking the video, it was fun to watch. I honestly don't have much experience in the unit but I do have a lot of elk hunting time under my belt. I'm not too concerned with the spike hunters as they can't hunt the last week when the hunt should be the best. In my experience the spike hunters don't venture too far from the roads as well.

At this point I'm not really considering a guide. I've always been a DIY solo hunter.

Thanks for your response...

I hunted the archery hunt in 2010. Best hunt I've ever had.

Here's my video of bulls I filmed during the archery only portion of the hunt.

I also did a really long hunt adventure challenge that year with all my scouting and the hunt documented in pics here:

anyway those might help get a feel for the area if you haven't already seen them.

Cheers, Pete

Thanks Pete!! It looks like you had a great time down there and your video made me wish that August/September were around the corner. Its going to be a long five months.

You think you have the last week to your self, just remember the rifle hunters have waited for over 20 years for this tag. They will start showing up Saturday or Sunday and by Wednesday they all will be there. Then you through in BTO , Mossback and the bear hunters it's tuff to get away from all the people. I was down there the last 10 days in 2013,the last 12 days in 2014 and the rifle hunt in 2015. That was on the ridge, you might check out the blues not as many people but lot harder to hunt.

Great tag to have I am sure you will have a blast yes expect some spike hunters. But don't let it in your head plenty of big bulls on that unit I am very jealous of your possible tag. You will love every minute of it. Don't let the Debbie downers try to sway you away. Great unit and hunt

I wonder if that huge 5x5 with those huge Whaletails was taken off the Blues last year, Best bull I saw up there as far as mass and being just huge.

I hope this pic posted. I also was hunting with my bow in 2010. I killed this bull opening morning. It was a blast to Scout and hunt down there. Met lots of good people too. I hope if you draw you have as much fun as I did. Good luck!

Very cool bull, thanks for sharing the picture!! Looks like you got him in some steep country. I like the lines you have up to keep him from sliding. I'm glad those spike hunters didn't ruin your hunt :).

The extra work was worth it for that bull. I'm sure the memories of how bad the pack out was have faded by now. I hope I get to send an arrow through a bull of that caliber come August-September.

The pack out was not terrible. I owe that to the many people who came and helped me. Many of them I had not even met before. Long story, but there are a lot of good people in the hills. I owe those guys. It was 1 trip out with so much help. If you do hunt it take some pics and let us see some of the fun.

muleyhunter413, that is not the best pic of arguably the most famous san juan bull ever killed, now is it? Come on, come on, post up a real pic of that bad boy :)

A couple of those dudes that helped you also helped me on my hunt. I met a number of super cool people down there and that was probably the most memorable part of the whole thing for me.

muleyking12, hint, hint... check out Utah450's hec from 2010 to see the scouting video and more of what you might be expect to see down there on your hunt.

Cheers, Pete

I went and looked at the video...that bull is a beast and it was awesome to see him on the hoof. Way to try and keep it on the down low. I agree with c3...a better pic is needed of that beast.

Here are a few others I have on my phone. My computer died recently and most of my pics are on it. I'll have to try again another day for more.
C3 that we a good year down there. Your bull was awesome and I can stI'll remember all the mud in the pics. Ha ha
Photo credit goes to Todd Black on that last pic. He was kind enough to send that pic to me. Also Utah450 sent me a disc with all his pics and video of my bull that he had taken. Such a fun year with good people running all over the unit. I wish I could do it all over again.

WOW!

Thanks Vanilla! Just wish I had better equipment and wasn't trying to sift through bulls and could just film! It's a heck of a place to chase elk!

Hoping that the mountain stays green all spring and summer.
The horns will be huge.

Yelum
That sure looks like him, watched him kick the crap out of a couple nice 6X6, he was just bigger in body and he just moved them all over the place. Saw some great battles on the top blues last year.

Did you ever hear want he scored.
