It's going to be a busy elk season this year. I drew an AZ unit 27 late tag and now a Valle Vidal muzzy tag. I can't believe it. Luckily I live only 3 hours from the unit so I will be doing a ton of scouting this summer and fall. This is a once in a lifetime tag so I'm going to make the most of it. Has anyone hunted this unit before? Does anyone have any advice for me, starting points? I do not have horses but I love backpack style hunts so I will be packing in. Any advice or help will be greatly appreciated.

Congrats Brother! Don't forget to post pixs

My oldest son and I drew valle vidal first hunt archery.
good luck to you!
Its our first time in this area, we live a bit further in southeast NM though so only gonna get to go up a couple of times for scouting

Good deal, hope to see another big bull on MM this fall.

Go buy a lottery ticket before your luck runs out lol. Going horseback will definitely improve your odds of tagging a bigger bull if you're trophy hunting which I assume you are with this tag. As far as areas go... it can be great literally anywhere! Lots of scouting is needed to locate the big boys and having the muzzy tag is in my opinion the best one to have to tag a whopper! good luck and remember to post youre success on here

I'm really getting tired of being reminded of this brent!!!!

Need I remind you that I gave you all the hunt codes I did as a sort of practical joke?

That was the hunt I've been applying for since I was 9 and you drew it first time out. And to make matters worse I cant even go with you because my nephew drew unit 36 muzzy elk at the same time and he has no one to take him.

I honestly laughed when I sent you the hunt codes I did. I laughed even harder when you told me you drew.

henry mountains rifle deer with ZERO points
Utah mountain goat with almost no points
boulder archer elk with one point???
and now valle vidal muzzy on your first try! that's the best hunt in nm in my opinion and I've hunted nearly all of the units in nm for elk.....

Oh well, I drew absolutely nothing!

Haha. Correction:

Henries rifle tag: 1 point
Mountain Goat: 2 points
Boulder elk: 13 points
VV: first try

I now have 3 points for deer in UT so I'm fully expecting another Henries tag. I can't figure out why it's taking so long to draw it again. They must've made a mistake last year.

Think he's talking about AZ

Marley, I sent you a message.

My hunting partner just drew early archery this year and I will be down on the hunt with him for calling and hauling. We are from Colorado and are typically high alpine backpack hunters in Colorado. This will be our first hunt outside of Colorado and would really appreciate any guidance or help.

We are more then willing to hike far and camp in the BC if it is beneficial and there are places not too close to the active areas.

Congrats! We'll be in the VV for the same hunt. My daughter drew the youth tag for VV back when NM allowed for youth to hunt it without it going against the adult OIL count and she drew it this year! Truly awesome place to be in the fall. Good luck, we'll be in the blue megacab dually with a matching 5th wheel most likely in the Cimarron campground. Stop by for a beer
