Drew both these units this year.
The AZ is a late Nov and the NM is Sept 1.
Anybody have some awesome information or some great stories to tell about these units and your hunts I'd love to hear them! I appreciate it !

13 is a strange unit, but does have big bulls, like this one a youth hunter had the pleasure of taking.

>That's a great bull, looks young
>too.

He was young , but he was tickling the 380 mark with the double swords so the young man decided to send him packing !!! Haha

Wow what a beautiful bull!"

Congrats to your hunter

Well I'll be joining you in unit 10 BUT sadly I won't be chasing elk ( my passion) . I'll be chasing goats but really excited about that. Bought into The ZGF with Travis McClendon so praying that all goes well. So far so good as Travis has been extremely gracious and helpful.

Unit 13 is a desert unit and much of it holds very few elk. Also, there are large areas of private ranches throughout the unit, and the Puebla of Acoma in the northern part. That said, there is plenty of public land. I've only hunted unit 13 once, in 2002, but killed my biggest bull to date, an old bull that weighed right at 1,000 pounds and had antlers scoring 386. Due to extreme drought, he lacked top end length, but had great mass throughout. I would suggest you look at public land east of Pie Town and north of the Southern Cross Ranch. Your tag is early and it'll be hot, so hunting water will be key to success.

Unit 10, I hunted Pronghorns there last year. There are some big bulls to be found there but I don't personally care for 10 as an elk unit. You'll be amazed at where you may find elk. I found a group of bulls in the northern end of the unit, right out by Cataract Canyon. They were bedded in the sage, miles from the nearest tree. If I had a unit 10 elk tag, I'd be sure to purchase a Boquillas Ranch permit and hunt near the boundary of the Hualapai reservation.

Great info CA, just curious how you did on your goat hunt in 10? I purchased access to Boquillas but know next to nothing about the unit. Thx Jim

LAST EDITED ON May-06-17 AT 09:40AM (MST)[p]I scouted the four days immediately before the season and one of the bucks I found really struck my fancy. He wasn't as big as I was searching for, but had really good prongs, one of which turned inward toward the other horn. I ended up shooting him the first evening and he scored 82 1/2" despite only being 14 3/4" long. Had 7" prongs. It was an enjoyable hunt that I got to share with my son, which made it all the better.

I killed that buck on Boquillas Ranch.

I hunted 13 last year. Tough hunt but there are some big bulls. Got a little lucky and got one on 9th day. This was the only shot opportunity I had during the hunt.
