Drew type 2, planning on special archery season so I can hunt entire unit.

Can anyone share access points on the west side of the unit? I need to get to know both north and south so I'm focusing on the west of Cody.

What is the country like? Public land? Privet? I know there is a little wilderness but outside that is it packpacking only? Any roads for a SXS to stake out a base camp? Are there trail head or is it just bush whacking?

Really looking forward to the hunt and I'd love some pictures of the country.

Thanks guys!

I will be hunting area 51 type-2 this fall.will be there in October for rifle season.
The forest service road known as Morrison Jeep trail will be your only good access to 54 type-2 from the West side. I will be using this road also.
Some rough areas ,but doable for ATV for sure.
Good luck and pm me if you like.

I should add that the trail I mentioned is best accessed from the Beartooth highway. There is no wilderness in 54 type-2. The 54 type-2 tag is for the area northwest of the Clark's fork river where the national forest borders the BLM land near Cody. Not the southern area.
Good hunting and hope this helps.

Sorry, I see you are hunting special archery.
You are correctly looking at southern part also.
Regs can obviously trip a guy up if not careful, ha ha.
Access is alot easier in the southern part in my opinion. Lots of private though. Would bet the elk spend alot of time on that ranch land during rifle season, but archery is a toss up I'm sure. Warm weather could make the southern part tuff.
Are you using an outfitter? I hear locals can be a little anal toward DIY guys and the nonres hunter sometimes. I hear they try to watch you like a hawk, worried some are out to trespass or poach game in some way, off of there honey holes.
I guess I can understand.
Doesn't bother me though, as I try to do things the right way.
Good luck on your research and don't let the self appointed wardens get you down. Happy hunting!
