Utah Youth any Bull

Hello,

I'm new to this elk hunting but have been hunting with parties of more experienced hunters the past two years. Well, my daughter drew out for the Utah Youth Any Bull hunt 2017 and I'm kind of on my own for this hunt with her.

I've looked at the map, and the areas I'm more familiar with are not included. We live in Logan Utah and rather not try and travel 4 hrs for an area as she is in her Senior year of HS and I teach HS and getting off is tough for us.

What areas this summer and fall should we go check out that might provide us with possibilities for the Sept Hunt?

We have ATVs, no horses, are in good shape for hiking, solid shots out to 350yds, and just want to have a chance on her only Youth hunt possibility.

Cheers,
Greg

With that time of year I would be sitting on the south slope over water in the am. Do a little scouting up there and find a couple good water holes. I had cams out last year in prep for the general and had elk watering daily until the day before the hunt started. Having to only go up against 500 people instead of 20000 if u put in a little effort u should end up succeeding. I would give u my spot but am holding out my kid will draw in the next few years.

Take a hard look at the North side of Parleys Canyon and the public part of East Canyon. If you're willing to hike it's a great place for the youth rifle hunt.

Soapstone is the north slope.... but there are great areas around there

this is good, as I'm heading to Soapstone Pass for a few days during the 4th of July! Any specific areas in that local area I should spend my limited time looking at?

I will take a look at those areas on a map. We don't mind hiking, but what is the chance we can get an ATV in to retrieve?

Cheers,

LAST EDITED ON Jun-26-17 AT 06:34AM (MST)[p]I think it's a long ways but...I can give you a couple ideas for the Flaming Gorge area if you are interested. It's a long drive but would be a good area.

Well this weekend is the start of the hunt. This summer was so busy I never got up into some areas to scout around in person, I've just been looking at maps.

Here is my plan at this point. Head up Weber Canyon Rd out fo Oakley to either Smith and Moorehouse reservoir or drive up the canyon further where the road becomes Nat. Forest area and hunt above that point.

The other option is to go Mirror lake hwy and get into Haystack Mt. or Mt. Watson areas.

I've looked as some of you suggested the south slope, but can't find access roads in this area.... I'm I missing them? I see lots of tribal lands! I don't think we have the time to go all the way to vernal, I hope to get in an area on Friday and look around.....then hunt on SAT/SUN....that is all we've got (sucks).

Cheers,
GREG

ps. thanks for the pointers thus far
