"Great year in Wyoming"

Looks like from what I'm reading and have heard that it might be not the best for muleys and antelope, but Elk seem to be doing very well.
Lots of snow melt could carry moisture long into the summer and could be some great horn growth.
Also good amounts of 4yr. and older bulls going in to the season.

Congrats to all that got an elk tag.
Sure glad I got one.

Elk always winter better than deer and antelope. Just bigger heartier animals. Congrats on your wyo tag.

I know its off topic. But I am looking to expand my horizons so to speak. I Need some help. My group is DIY. I am looking at WMA 59 in Wyoming to bowhunt. Is there any help I can get? Its an '18 hunt. I have heard you have to get a guide? I have heard you do not. Can anyone help with some clear details. Don't want to know your trailhead or anything like that. Just some answers to some of the basics

What elk unit is the wma inside?
What's the name of the wma?
What county is it in?
Most importantly, what tag did you draw?

Be glad to help if I can.

Hey thanks for getting back. I am going to be carpet bombing the west as far as apps go. But my main goal is getting to Wyoming to bowhunt. I am really looking at unit 56 & 59 in the Shoshone. I hear about the rugged terrain. I have heard you have to have a guide if you are non resident. I have heard about the bears and the wolves. It's one of those things where I am planning for next year ('2018). I am more of a diy guy. It's just one of those deal where I am trying to get this state figured out and how I need to go about it. I thank you for any advice I can get.

5. "RE: Great year in Wyoming"

I have not hunted Wyoming yet, but did draw an elk tag this year.
I've been researching for a very, very, long time.

The units you mentioned are great elk units. Some of the best places to hunt elk in Wyoming according to what I've found.

But,56 is tuff to draw for a non-resident, almost impossible actually. There are only 10 tags total given out there a year.
If you're looking for a bow hunt only, a type-9 archery only tag might be what you want. But unit 56 doesn't have a type-9 tag, so you would have to draw with all the rifle hunters and then purchase a archery license to bow hunt it.
It is about 40% wilderness, so there is ample land to hunt without a guide.

Unit 59 does have a type-9 tag and can usually be drawn more easily than the rifle tag.
But, lots of wilderness there. About 75%, so a guide would be an extra likely need to find elk.
Very rugged terrain also in 59.

How many points do you plan on having in 2018?

I may be able to suggest a couple other units to look at.

I am going in fresh in Wyoming. I hunt and have points in the states closest to me in Texas. But getting to Wyoming with a bow is a dream hunt for me.

It's about doing the work and knowing I was successful because of the work. The units I mentioned are rugged. They got bears and everything else that would tell me to move on. But that's half the fun of this craziness called western public land hunting.

I'm going to be hunting elk unit 51 north of the units you mentioned.
Lots of rouph terrain and even more gizzlies.
I'm doing a rifle hunt. It will be during October and the weather is likely going to get serious after mid October.
Great elk trophy potential in that unit and 5 or less points to draw on average.
Unit 54 is good choice also but takes more points to draw the southern part of the unit.
The northern part of 54 can be had for 6 normally.

Unless you want to wait 20 years plus to elk hunt, 56 doesn't look good.
If you have 4or5 points you can draw a good tag in Wyoming, but some areas certainly take way more if they are popular.

Good luck

All I can say is come on January 1 and let chips fall where they may. Congrats on your tag By the way. Naw work I thought was going to keep me away. Didn't even apply or think to. Just said screw it I am going in '18 and going to start to just run up any days off I get. Weather permitting and scout, camp, and really throw my heart back into it As far preparing physically and between the ears. Come September 1 2018 when I am not working I am packing in somewhere above 8000' elevation. I thank you for sharing your info. I pray you put one in the freezer. We'll get this one figured out.

I didn't get lucky this year unfortunately... I wanted it bad this year. We saw a lot of bulls last year that should be pretty solid this year. Hopefully they're all around next year.

I drew 51 type-2 elk, region F deer, and 22 doe antelope tags.
Plan on coyote and maybe some grouse or rabbits also.
Will be out the entire month of October.
Going for the most bang I can get on this trip. It's been three years since I have gone on a hunting trip anywhere.
Need some time away from the world.
