Hey guys I drew the 46-1 bull tag this year and like most I never thought I had a chance, especially this being the first year I applied. Knowing that this will likely be the once in my lifetime draw, I have already made a day trip down there to scout. I didnt see any elk which doesnt worry me in the slightest as I have been told by many that area of the state is stuffed with big mature bulls. Now, this country is far different from any elk country I have ever been in so im hoping some one may have some intel on tatics to hunt that country and possibly some info on where in the unit to spend my time!

I hunted there last year in a different season. Loaded is not what I would say for the early rifle hunt I had and the deer hunters had the elk moved out of a lot of the country I hunted in. People all over the place with the deer tags going on. There is for sure elk but it is not a slam dunk for sure in the earlier seasons.

The later hunts with more migratory elk are much better with a lot more elk and less pressure from all the deer hunters and have a lot higher % of harvest. I covered tons of ground and found very very few elk. I had a friend help me with some areas to check and was baffled on how few of elk we saw when he joined me compared to what he saw in the past. The success for your hunt over the last 4 years has been an avg of 39%. High year 56% and low year 18% harvest.

That area has some tank bulls if you get into them. Wish you the best and hopefully you can stick a toad.

It's a huge unit and the elk can be tough to find in it. I'd definitely be doing as much glassing as you can handle. I hear a lot of people talk about the huge bulls that are in that unit and I'm not sure if they're getting that from Eastmans or what? I'd say more bulls get shot closer to 300" than 380" in the unit so I guess it depends what huge is.
