Elk 2nd rifle season 2017

LAST EDITED ON Jul-23-17 AT 12:22PM (MST)[p]I drew a tag for 2nd rifle season in unit 61 colorado and am looking for any info on this unit. I will be hunting solo and have a four wheeler to move around. anyone know a good area to hunt I would appreciate all response and thanks in advance Knickdog

State? Unit? Kinda of hard to recommend areas without that

LAST EDITED ON Jul-23-17 AT 04:34PM (MST)[p]That unit is a tough one. Easy to get lost. But if you hike up Bullofthewoods mountain until you get to Elkbed park, you should do OK.

Oh, 61 Colorado? Sorry, never been there. Should be a good hunt!

Thanks for the input, I will do what it takes to get a good elk this year, I intend to go a couple days early and scout out a few places

It's really not a couple of days early type of unit. Very large and very diverse. But i'm sure some guys fall out of their truck opening morning on the Divide Road and shoot a unit 61 bull. Is there anyway you could spend a few weeks in the unit prior to your hunt to learn the area and road system?

Yes I could spend some extra time to find my way around,but with hunting already started in the area I would not want to drive around the roads while other hunters were hunting and take a chance on messing them up. I will consider getting there as early as possible to find my way around. Thanks

Lots of us are going to be wandering around hunting turkey and grouse anyway. I just stay out of the canyons which is where you will find the majority of the better elk.
