LAST EDITED ON Aug-02-17 AT 05:39PM (MST)[p]Excited to have purchased a tag for this specific unit along with whitetail tag and a wolf tag.

Our plan is to access by boat in late October and hunt through Nov 3, which is apparently the end of the season.

From what I've read the Timber is very heavy- which would seem to be very favorable to good quality, yet the fact that it is OTC, perhaps not.

Would anyone have experience they might care to contribute about this particular unit?

It would be greatly appreciated.

I've read as much as possible on this unit but It would be great to hear from someone about this unit and it's opportunities.

Anyone?

The wolves have changed the elk hunting up there for the worst. It isn't worth even thinking of buying a elk tag. Deer still good and make sure you have a wolf tag, and shoot everyone you see.

Thank you very much huntnrich.

Unfortunately, I did buy an Elk tag. Unfortunate if what you say is still true, and I have little reason to doubt you .

Based upon what I've witnessed in Idaho that seems to be the story in many places.

However I did buy a wolf tag and will take one if I see it.

Deer are apparently the big draw for that area. Although we have no shortage of whitetail here in Texas. Good ones too...

I appreciate the info

LAST EDITED ON Aug-04-17 AT 12:11PM (MST)[p]I have not hunted that area. However, in some of the other areas in the state that I hunt I have noticed behavioral changes in the elk. In areas where the wolf population is high they seem to not be less vocal. IMHO the primitive areas have been the toughest areas to regulate the wolf pop. In most areas (Again IMHO) I believe ranchers, trappers and hunters have made a significant reduction in the number of wolves eating our elk!

Good luck on your hunt!
FILL THAT WOLF TAG!

I haven't hunted it yet but my boy and his wife live in the area and I've been checking it out in preparation for next year.

Sure, you could cry wolf, but I prefer a more positive attitude. Fact is, elk success rates have been between 15-20% over the past few years and the population is trending up - not too bad for an OTC hunt.

I'm thinking the biggest challenge will be the topography - wicked steep, thick and heavily wooded.

Good luck!
