UTAH GAME AND FISH CALLED ME A COUPLE DAYS AGO. SAID I WAS NEXT IN LINE FOR ARCHERY ELK TAG. I ACCEPTED IT BUT CAN ONLY HUNT LAST WEEK OF SEASON. SEPT 7-15. IM FROM 1500 MILES AWAY AND CANT SCOUT. IM A DIY GUY BUT GAVE UP MY PREFERENCE POINTS FOR THIS TAG, AND HAVE TO WAIT TO APPLY AGAIN IF IM CORRECT. SO IM BEGINNING TO SECOND GUESS MY DIY APPROACH BECAUSE I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THE UNIT, WOULD U GUYS GO GUIDED UNDER THESE CIRCUMSTANCES OR STICK WITH THE SATISFACTION OF KILLING ONE DIY EVEN IF IT MEANS TAG SOUP. IM 47 AND IN DECENT SHAPE WITH YEARS OF ELK HUNTING EXPERIENCE, BUT A OUTFITTER MAY HELP ME GET A BETTER BULL AND TAKE THE PROBLEM OF GETTING ONE OUT AWAY. ANY SUGGESTIONS? PRESTON GRAY

If you have the means than there is nothing wrong with having some help on your hunt in your situation.

Congrats... hunt starts a week from today. If you are worried about tag soup I'd definitely get a guide. Nothing wrong with that especially with the short amount of time left before the hunt starts and the time you'll be able to hunt. That would give you the highest chance of getting it done.

Tough tag to have and a late start at that. I would look into a guide service rather people want to hear it or not the Wasatch has turned into a tough hunt for the most part. Getting a late start only makes it worse

I 2nd sjsage!

Get in touch with Beavis!

I Think He Guarantee's 375"+!

Back Me Off to 1,700 Yards,650 is a Little Close & I'm Not Comfortable with it!

A GUT SHOT at 1,700 Yards will Still Make Some Good BRAGGIN Rights so I Can Say I At Least Hit Him!

If you can afford a guide, get one. Berry is a great option.
If you cannot afford one, start asking for a bit of help.
You will get pointed in the right directions.

Keep in mind "pointed in the right direction" still makes this a tough hunt.

thanks for the replies, is the wasatch tough for any size bull diy, or just for people trying to kill a trophy?

There are numerous guys on here that know the unit far better than me BUT the rap on the Wasatch is they have raised the amount of elk they kill significantly the last 7years; spikes, cows and LE bulls therefore the average age of bulls has decreased. The unit is huge and some monsters still survive despite all of the pressure. But with limited time, you are getting great advice.

My plans 7 years ago was to draw the archery tag, hunt the entire season (water early/rut later). Now I have the points, I'm not so sure.

i would love to kill a seven year old bull , but as lost as I'm gonna be in the unit coming from louisiana, I'm trying to focus on areas to explore once i get there so i don't waste my whole hunt looking for elk instead of actually hunting

LAST EDITED ON Aug-15-17 AT 06:31PM (MST)[p]I went with Shayne Ford and had a blast. He doesn't advertise much but came highly recommended.I hunted both Waldsberg and Soldier Summit areas with him.
The number I have is 801-376-8651

i appreciate all the comments and recommendations for outfitters, I'm gonna try and hunt the last part of the archery season because i like the bugling and may have a little better rut action then. if i kill one i will post up some pics here

Bulls were screaming their heads off last night and this morning.... even had two bulls fighting and stealing cows. Lots of noses in the air and tongues a flicking....

On the wasatch, I came down this afternoon and just got off the phone with my buddies who are still up there, they stated that elk were fired up again tonight.

Tons of good bulls in the unit diy is very very doable. My dad drew a few years ago and I went out and helped him. Found lots of good bulls. my 2 cents

thanks guys I'm dying to get out there but work is killing me. I'm self employed and this is my busy season. i hope to get away around sept 1 to start hunting

I just spent 6 days on the Wasatch the elk I seen were not even showing much for pre rut activity. Bulls were still grouped together nowhere near the cows.
All in all seen 40 plus elk and a few good moose
