LAST EDITED ON Sep-01-17 AT 02:09PM (MST)[p]Hi guys
Well when my son called and excitedly told me he had drawn his UT elk tag I about fell over. Because he had only been putting in for a couple years so I had him putting in for some of the best units possible.
Well after he sent me his info I saw that he had messed up and applied for the Paunsaugunt for not only deer but elk as well.
I never even knew there were elk on it but after looking into things some I couldn't believe how many points some were burning on that tag so I figured it must have some good bulls. So I told him we should do it, he's young in his 20s and in good health so why not.
Living 1500 miles away makes it tough to really do any preseason scouting so we are just going to get there a few days early and see what we can come up with.
One thing that concerns me now thou is I just looked into the management plan and was shocked to see that they manage the unit for just 175 elk. Plans are made, I'm just not going to tell my son that tid bit of information.
I've did allot of research and have some ideas about where I think we are going to start. But if any of you have knowledge of the area and feel like sharing any of it we'd greatly appreciate it. You can just message me. Its his first elk hunt so he's pretty excited and so am I for him.
Good luck to you all with tags in your pacs this fall!
And If you need any info about elk hunting in WY or Deer hunting in Canada I might be able to help you if its in areas I'm familiar with.
Thanks!

There used to be elk on the road that follows the East Fork of the Sevier River, south of Tropic Reservoir and on the Loop Road, south off the Crawford Road.

In more recent years I seen elk on the east side of the Skutumpah Ranch road. They feed in the hay fields on the ranch at night and hold up in the junipers during the day.

This information my be too old to help but if you can't find elk else where, it's worth a look.

All the best, they've are pretty challenging to find on that unit.

It was quite a few years ago, but I drew the archery deer tag and came around the corner on a midday ride on my quad and had a herd of elk including 2 bulls, one 320 and another 350 class, standing right in the road. I literally drove to archery range of them as they stood there and looked at me. They were on a road not too far behind Ruby's Inn (but still on NF lands). That unit can kick out a big elk or two.

Thanks guys so much for your help! We had one heck of a great hunt! Headed home a whole lot heavier, thank you Utah for my son's first bull! He's one of the heaviest horned bulls I've laid my hands on, just a brute!

Thanks a bunch guys!
To tell you the truth after scouting before the opener we never saw or heard a single elk. So opening morning was like none I can remember, we were still at square one. We had only seen fresh track with a small herd that were fresh after all that rain on thursday.
So that was the area we were going to concentrate on. But to tell you the truth, that area is so much more beautiful and "elky" than I ever imagined! You would think there would be elk everywhere, it is the perfect habitat! But when we found out they manage that large unit for only 140 head of elk we knew we had our work cut out for us! We got lucky, when we heard that bugle we were like no way is that a real elk?! My son got to experience quite a show, 18 cows being taken care of by him and a satellite trying his best to get in on the action. They bedded across from us at 400 yds in the timber that we could see all the way around. We waited them out for several hours until they got on their feet. They had no idea we were there and he didn't know what hit him. We were very fortunate indeed, and couldn't have done it without the help of others. Especially Kevin, thank you very very much, your the man!

Congrats! I like it when hunters ask for help and then post the successful harvest pics. What a way to put closure on the whole experience...thanks for sharing.

I tried adding a video and it looks like I messed things all up!
Anyways what I had said before.

Thanks guys so much for your help! We had one heck of a great hunt! Headed home a whole lot heavier, thank you Utah for my son's first bull. He's one of the heavier horned bulls I've laid my hands on, thanks again those of you that got us on the right track it is greatly appreciated! What a beautiful place, we must have said that a hundred times this trip! You folks in Utah have one amazing state!
