I have never hunted Elk before, and am looking to put some meat in the freezer for my family. I live in Utah county and am looking for somewhere close, to be able to hunt after work, and on weekends. I was thinking West Desert East, or Fillmore Oak Creek. If anyone could point me in a direct in where to turn up some Elk I would really appreciate it. My wife said she would like to join me for the hunt, so im really looking forward to it. Please dm me with any information you feel like sharing.

Thank you in advance

You will be sorely disappointed if you go into this hunt with any expectations. The Gen Any Legal Weapon Elk Hunt is one of the toughest hunts out there for a new-comer.

Most people who know where the elk are on these hunts won't share info because its that tough of a hunt. Of course there are guys who have access to private land or will tell you its the easiest hunt, but the latter is a liar and the first is spoiled rotten! :)

You aren't going to have much success if you are going to try and kill an elk after work. Most hide 2+ miles from any road and are elusive as crap.

Just go hoping to see an elk but don't plan on seeing anything from the road and definitely don't plan on killing anything even close to a road.

Good luck. just my 2 cents

Having never hunted elk before, I'd recommend you participate in the spike hunt instead of the any bull. It puts you on a LE unit where you will have better odds of SEEING elk (which would make your wife happy). Spike elk only consist of about 8% of the elk population, but seeing elk is more than half the battle. The elk still may be talking a little which is another plus of the spike hunt. Nothing quite like the sound of a bugle cutting through the dense cold air in the morning!

Like 3006 said, the any bull rifle hunt is a really tough hunt. You need to put the work in to locate the animals before the shooting starts opening morning.

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. I have always heard from people pulling L.E. tags and how annoying spike hunters were to them, so that was in the back of my mind. My time is limited with my deer tag, so I know I wont be able to spend p.t.o. on this hunt. So really appreciate the advice.

Good luck... you'll need it! Hahaha that's one of the worst units in the state to hunt on the spike hunt if you don't like company! Better bring your own rock to sit on. All the ones up there will have orange hats already sitting on them

Nebo is as good as any other show in town, sure there are hunters everywhere, but that is the norm for all spike units in the state. It will be crowded no doubt, but you should see elk, who knows might get lucky and have an opportunity at a spike. After opener you are ganna have to hunt some out of the way hell holes. Opener will be a circus just like every other unit in the state and the elk will be running all over. But it can be fun if your in the right place at the right time. After the fireworks I would focus your time in the lower expanses of the unit including the face as most of the elk will have bailed into the thick nasty. Good luck.

Yeah I would not recommend an any bull hunt especially on that unit, the first 2 years I hunted any bull because my wife and brother in law was like this is the best hunt there is, well lets say those 2 years I hiked well over 50 miles around the desert, a ton of glassing and never turned up a thing, there is private property I guess from what I herd they all go to, and not this last year but the year before I finally seen elk, only time I've ever seen elk out there, last year didn't waist my time out there.

Safe to say it's a very thin herd, I'd stick to the spike hunt. Odds are better.
