News rules for elk

I saw on the news last night they are looking to change elk hunting in any bull units to allow people to hunt archery, rifle and Muzzleloader and not have to choose. That seems great in theory but I think it will mean a whole hell of a lot more elk will be killed. It is hard enough already getting into them.
Am I just off my rocker on this or is this a good thing?

Not sure what itis supposed to accomplish??? I kill an elk every year on the general season hunt. I usually get it done within 4-5 days. Not sure a person needs any more opportunity to ruin the poor herd we have. Just learn how to hunt elk!

I would love to hunt all 3seasons. But I think it's a terrible idea. I hope they aren't seriously thinking about it.

Oh, they are serious! The wildlife board/DWR sees the $'s here.

This would cause a lot more crowding on the general units per each hunt. Unless they limit the #'s of these tags by unit (like dedicated hunter deer), I would think it's a poor choice!

I would like to know what the Forest service will do when these elk hunters show up in August and leave there campers till October.Remember only 16 days and it's time to move. Its hard enough to find a camping spot now. This will make it just a bigger chit show.

I'd bet it will drive more elk onto private land which may cause more problems as well. That being said, if it happens I'll probably be one of the hunters.

Amen to that. The last few years I have hunted in an area up Diamond Fork. Just off the oil, where everyone camps, has several camps that start 1st of Aug and dont move all archery, Muzzle and Rifle hunts. Its so annoying. Year after year they are always in the same places for months. I dont think they every check some areas.

It's going to create overcrowding issues. The success rate will obviously go up on the units. And the units have a small elk population to begin with. It blows my mind they used the 80k elk numbers in the state to come up with this. We all know most of those elk reside on the limited entry units.
Another cash grab by the dwr

"Give bull elk hunters a chance to hunt all three seasons ? archery, rifle and muzzleloader ? on the state's spike-only and any-bull general elk hunting units."

Just to Clarify it is for bull elk not giving them a choice of either sex if that is what you meant.

I don't think its going to help there objective people need to get out hunt and not from the road or Atv trails a lot of hunters can't take that much time off any ways I don't think it would be as crowded as we think as for hunting all 3 hunts I think it's a good idea

I think it's great!! First of all, from what I read it will be a limited number on spike and a limited number on any bull.

Second. Most people will not spend the extra money, and then a majority of the ones that do don't really hunt that hard or that far from the road. I think you will see a small up tick in success rates the first year, then it will level out or drop.

More crowding!? This comes from the same pool of 15k tags there's always been.

Crowding will remain the same. Just as bad as it's always been. There might be a few more guys on the archery, if any thing the muzzy will get the brute of increased hunters. Again though, not any worse than the rifle has ever been.

Also, more elk killed? Doubt it. If hunters can't manage to kill an elk on the rifle, what makes you think they can accomplish it on the muzzleloader? Or bow for that matter?

They won't. They will keep eating the same tag soup they are used to

So what is it that worries you? Since your yearly fill average can't legally exceed the 100% you're boasting about, It must be the other guys culling percentage you worry about impacting the poor herds. As long as they fall to your superior prowess I guess it is less likely to ruin things eh? Interesting self centered logic there.

The dates that fall in the rut will get the most crowded.
Just think how many hunters will be out and about during that period.

"I have found if you go the extra mile it's Never crowded".
