Hi all,
My father in law is 71 years old and has 16 non res points in Arizona for elk. He really wants to hunt elk this year. He is a archery hunter and in good shape, but getting worried as time is passing.

Can anybody help out with a unit he could draw with 16 points and and a good outfitter he could use? He really wants an oppurtunity at a 300 plus inch bull. He has primarily hunted Muleys and has never taken a bull yet and it is on his bucket list.

Thanks in advance and pm?s are fine.

YES.........CONTACT STEVE CHAPPELL. I WAS IN THE SAME PLACE WITH 17 POINTS. HE HAD LOTS OF OPTIONS ON DIFFERENT UNITS. HE SELECTED A GREAT UNIT AND SHOWED ME A GOOD NUMBER OF BULLS BEFORE I ARROWED A GOOD 6X6. THE GUY IS USER FRIENDLY, AND JUST A GOOD FELLA TO BOOT. HE DOES HIS HOMEWORK !!!!! YOU WONT BE SORRY......................YD.

Thank you for the info Yukon and Wapiti, any chance you would be open to a phone conversation with my father in law. Really appreciate your help. Thanks

Those are all good options.
Another option if you wanted to hunt unit 1 is Duwane Adams I have hunted with him and had a great hunt. The nice thing about Duwane's hunts is his price which is in line with others includes the whole season so your able to pass many Bulls without the pressure of a shorter hunt.

A lot of unit 1 is easy to get around in. I like the above suggestion or Steve C is Great Guy too........BULL!

Call Daniel Franco - Burnt Timber Outfitters. Unit 3A / 3C. Small personal type outfit. Easy going great guys to hunt with. Born, raised, and live in the unit. Avid bow hunters. Easy terrain good access and BIG Bulls. If I could draw that tag I'd go with them in a heartbeat. 16 points should do it. I hunted Mule Deer with them last fall. Let me know if you'd like more info.

Keep in mind AZ is in a bad dry spell right now. I heard on the radio it's the driest in recorded history and that the majority of AZ hasn't gotten any rain since August. Next year could be bad if we don't cool down and get some rain. Today it was 13 degrees above average.

I just listened to that same thing on Jay Scott podcast talking about dry conditions this fall and winter. With that said, unit 1 is traditionally a fairly wet unit from my understanding and not as susceptable to drought and unit 10 has the Boquillos ranch where they have a water system for cattle that should help w natural drought. Those two units would be my top two units if u can draw w 16 pts. I hadn't looked that close at points to draw those units early archery but 16 points should be close

With 16 Non-Res points, he wouldn't be guaranteed a tag in the best units like 9, 10, 23...but he could get most other units. Like, he probably would get unit 1 unless there is a big point creep. 7W would be another good option...he'd be pretty much guaranteed a tag and there are some big bulls up there. So, unless he puts in for 9 or 10, he should draw in the bonus pass for just about any unit. As for an outfitter, I'd look at A3. Chappell seems like a top notch guy too.

Also, make sure he knows how the draw works. He wants to put in for a unit where he will get drawn in the bonus pass, so that would make it pointless to put in for units 9, 10, 23. For instance if he were to put in for Unit 9 and Unit 8, he would not be in the bonus pass for 9, but would be for 8. So he would draw a Unit 8 tag in the bonus pass and have a zero percent chance at Unit 9. If he were to put in for Unit 9 AND 10, then he wouldn't be in the bonus pass for either unit and would then enter the "draw", meaning he'd have maybe a 5% chance of drawing.

That's a lot of points to burn on a dry year, I would hold out unless we get some good storms soon. Plenty of bulls in the 300+ range in any AZ unit, so either way should make for a good hunt!

lOTS OF POINTS but he at that point he needs to make something happen soon.
Steve is a good safe bet, He can get him into a good bull.
