Hey everyone I'm cashing out this year and putting in for the manti archrey unit I'm not new to bow hunting elk im new to this unit I've been doing reviewing maps and I'm going to be doing a lot of scouting I have horses so getting in deep is not a problem just looking get a little info on it not honey holes thanks in advance

Hook on to skyline drive off of hwy 6 between soldier summit and Scofield reservoir. Drive south on it till you get to I-80.

Look left and look right on your way.

With the ability to chase bull elk in Colorado, Idaho, Montana, ect over the counter every year I'm confused why so many wait so long and burn points on an archery elk hunt in Utah.

I'm just saying there's so many ways to chase elk without burning points and having to stop hunting on September 13th.

yea There?s is more options but It just sounded fun for a hunt if I waited another year I was putting in with a friend on the archrey wasatch ? summer bettter unit in my opinion I was looking over by that area as well

I have been all over the North side of the unit and I would say horses aren't really necessary there, anyone willing to put in a few miles can cover 90% of the north side, the South part of the unit doesn't seem to get hit as hard and may have better areas to get away from crowds using horses.

Yea I noticed that there was not much area that really needed horses even on the south end didn't look much better to have horses any suggestions I've seen horse shoe flat gooseberry area are decent look for elk but that's it

Far south. I'd sit out on the end of Trail Ridge and glass down in towards the Muddy and Blue lake a view times while scouting. Might surprise you.

I trip into 6 mile won't be a waste of time either.

Good luck.

Second I hit enough points in doing the same. Points are useless, hunting is what its about.

You can actually get 6 miles I'm down there? I was looking at the maps after I read your comment I'm probably hitting the middle to southern part of the unit to Scout it and setting up some cams where we're u talking about blue and muddy lake couldn't find it on the map

Haha I'll let you know how good the unit is byebyeobmas the south end looks like the less accessible part of the u it what I'm looking for going to put my wall tent up and have a 3 man tent to get deep in if need be

The Sky Line drive road goes from the north Fairview canyon to south Salina Creek down to Interstate 70. Sky Line is the top of the divide of the Wasatch Plateau the watershed runs east from this divide or west the Sky Line drive is over 60 miles of very little graded gravel road I don't know for sure but it is probably one of the longest roads of continuous miles with out loosing more than a 1700 foot elevation 9800 ft on North end 10700 high point in middle to 9100 on southern where you can go down Salina Creek or Willow Creek. The Muddy and Blue lake is off the east of Sky Line drive south of 12 mile camp ground and North of Gunnison Valley. Sky Line drive is something you need to experience if you like to go for rides in the mountains

Living in the middle of the Manti Unit my whole life, I can tell you there are good bulls up every canyon. Roadless areas are becoming just as crowded as regular areas. Canal canyon is no different than Ephraim Canyon other than the mode of transportation. With the popularity of OHV's, rough roads don't deter anyone. The best advice I can give you is no matter where you go be prepared to see other hunters. Lots of them hunting cows and spikes. Don't get too discouraged working too hard before the rut starts. Plan on the last week of the hunt to get things done.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-05-18 AT 09:18PM (MST)[p]I appreciate the help there and I figured it would be tough at the first little bit I'm planning on hunting the first few days and taking the last 2 weeks off of the hunt and I figure the last week is going to be the week if it happens it will be a fun hard hunt for sure

You may not need to pack in to find a good bull, but wherever you end up...horses are nice on the pack out. If you do want to use your horses, fish creek is a good ride with the potential to find a nice bull. Plenty of canyons on the south end that I wish I had been on a horse instead of my feet. PM me for more specifics.
