Colorado unit 76 elk

I didn't draw my Wyoming elk tag this year, so now I'm going to burn my points in Colorado. I have 16 non resident points and should draw unit 76 1st rifle. Never been down there but my dad hunted it like 20 years ago. I'm sure things have changed a little. Anyways I'll have horses and want to pack in 4 to 6 miles to get away from some hunters. Any drainages that are better than others? Anyone hunt it last year that would be willing to share some information.?
Thanks.

If you wanna go to go, then go ahead, but IMO, that is way too many points to burn on that unit.

Sadly enough this is close to what it takes to draw this hunt. I am in the same boat 16 nr points and most "good" units and or hunts are way out of range. Not another post to complain about point creep but seems like it is time to use points on an average unit. Not interested in waiting 20 years for a 310 class bull, not worth it but might become a reality in CO. Guess I just need to go hunting and enjoy the time and not the score. Many other otc hunts in a few other states that this same 310 bull can be had. Good luck to everyone in the draw.

I'm in the same boat and was considering the same hunt. I know some outfitters hunt the Ute drainage. If you look at the Colorado atlas and overlay the elk filters it may give you some ideas. With horses you should have a good hunt.

how many is 61 taking these days? 76 and 49 by reputation only doesn't move the needle much for bigger bulls. Another option would be unit 40 and pay for land access via an outfitter.

Hunted the early rifle a few years ago. 4 of us went and 2 tagged out on good bulls. In my opinion the unit is a bit over rated, for several reasons. Taking 20 points to hunt there is crazy. One of the bulls was killed above the reservoir and the other was not far from the Weminuche trail head out of Creed. I don't think there is any secret to hunting that unit.

The high elevation can be a killer if you are not ready/careful. We saw elk at the very tip tops of the mountains, not much air up there.
