Book Cliffs Roadless

I assume you are a resident and asking about the early rifle tag. If you have 17 points now (16 last year) I would guess you are at least 2-3 years out for a guaranteed tag. It took at least 18 points to draw last year & there are still several guys from that group that will have 19 this year, not to mention those that have 18 and 17 points in your pool, all going for 10 bonus permits.

Let the DWR hear about the point creep and now allowing spike hunters to hunt all three seasons. Even if it only results in 5 more spikes to be harvested this year in the roadless, that is 5 more mature bull tags that can't be issued in 5-6 years.

If you have 17 points this year and the people who put in last year put in again and no other people in your point area were to put in, you have 13 applicants ahead of you for 10 tags and will have 12 with 17 this year. I know that is not realistic to say people won't change were they apply, but hope that helps you see where you sit.

why roadless was in there last year with my nephew not much quality finally came out with 340 bull .a lot of dinks to many tags to many people seen 4 tags filled with rag 5 points sad state in roadless.

I'm sure the roadless is a good tag, but if you understand how much elk travel it's not really as big of deal as it's made to be in my opinion.

If you look at the states it pretty much confirms it. success and age stats are so close to the rest of the Book Cliffs it's irrelevant.

That said I'd still rather have the roadless tag. but only because I like hunting in roadless areas.

I appreciate all the information. A lot of me putting in for this area is the fact that I love to hunt or even just be in the roadless part of the Books. I guess it's kind of nostalgic for me. Having said that, I still see good bulls every year.

I was in there for the muzzy deer hunt last year, and boy do I wish I had a muzzy elk tag. If you ever draw the early rifle you are in for one hell of a good time. I saw some wonderful bulls and some not too far from the entry points on both ends. Good luck to you.

I also spent the muzzle loader deer hunt in there the previous two seasons. Saw some pretty good bulls. How did you do on the deer hunt?

I agree with Post 9
IT could be a Good hunt if you hunt in the right area.

Best spot in the roadless is 800 yards north/northwest of the trailhead by 10 mile knoll. Most everyone heads south and you can glass the best spot from the main road ?

I ended up harvesting a mid 170 buck on the roaded side. Spent a few days scouting in the roadless, and saw more nice elk then deer. Would love to have the elk tag.
