Well, I think my friends and I are finally going to break down and book a guided elk hunt. It has nothing to,do with our skill levels. One is an elk, guide in WA and my buddy and I have horses and have packed into WA, ID and MT backcountry many times. We just want a relaxing hunt where someone else cooks, feeds horses etc so,we can concentrate on hunting.

We want a late season, pack in elk hunt, hopefully hitting a migration yand snow. We have points in WY. But interested in WY or MT with a good chance of a 300 class bull (or better of course). I have been thinking about the Bighorns, Absarokee/ Beartooth or Thorofare (Thorofare has always been my dream but I hear it is pretty sad now).

Anyway...anyone have outfitter recommendations for that type of hunt? Like I said, we know how to hunt we just want to have a good time. There will be 4 or possibly 5 of us. This would be for 2019. And ...we do not want a ranch hunt. High country pack in hunts.

Thanks in advance,

Mike Henne

If you mean " late " late season most of those take lots of points, max usually in WY.

For regular dates in WY , do you have enough points to draw 45? Todd Jones is a good one.

On a general tag JJ ( Wapati Ridge ) packs a very limited number of hunters into the wilderness south of Cody and they do very good on quality bulls . probably the best general hunt I know of but it's very rough country and not for everyone know that right up front. He's normally booked a year or two in advance is another thing.

Thanks for the info.. my partner and I drew 23 in 2016 so we only have a couple points each. Another guy has 7 or 8, not sure about the others. I will have to look at what 45 needs. I will look at Wapiti Ridge too.

With those points you can cross 45 off your list.

Check JJ's hunt out. I've hunted sheep and elk with him in that area if you have any questions I can tell you what I've seen.

You might be onto something with the Thorofare too, I want to do that when I get old enough I want softer hunts. most outfitters in there just take so many hunters is my only concern .
