Kentucky Elk Drawing

Anyone know a good guide. My 13 year old son got a cow tag. I am looking for someone who guides on some private land. I'm trying to avoid forcing him to shoot at wild or running elk.

Hurley Coombs with Lost Mountain Outfitters is who I would call first but there are others. They have a Web site that has their contact information. I think they usually have more hunters than the other outfitters.

If you are concerned about the elk being wild from hunting pressure I don't think in most areas they will be any wilder than they normally are. Each of the two rifle cow seasons have 145 tags spread over a sixteen county area.

Those hunts are in December. Some of the locals say it's harder to kill a cow than a bull.

We talked to Lost Mountain when my son drew a tag but ended up going non-guided. They sounded like they knew what they were doing.

Thanks, I spoke with a guide in the Hazard area and he implied the the elk were spooky and it was kind of like shooting running coyotes. In 2016 I drew the same tag and hunted in Inez on private land. We found a 2 cows and a calf at sunrise that we watched feed at 150 yards. We decided it was going to be a hard recovery so we moved on. We came back that evening and one was in a better place so we took her. She turned out to be a 17 year old cow, she ate like 21 year old cow. From the tag in her ear I traced her to Taos New Mexico where she was trapped out of a helicopter in 2001. Some health issues may sideline that guide this season. I will give LMO a call, thanks
