It's been a long time coming, but I guess 23 years was enough.
I've already spent two days on the mountain and seen several bulls branched to 4s and 5s.
I am gathering all the info I can but I'd love to hear what some of you have to say about this hunt. PMs would probably be best.
I'm really curious what the consensus would be on horn growth this year, given it is bone dry down there and it's only MAY! Should I turn back the tag? I know at least one guy would think that's a great idea. :)

LBH, you'll do just fine keeping it, you have the know how... Enjoy today because you never know about tomorrow... I wish you luck and I cannot wait to see the adventure you have... I'm no help to you just a cheerleader, it's been 10 years since I've ben on the unit...good luck and have fun!!!

Don't even think about turning that tag back in. The best horn growth years are when it's hottest and driest !!!

What your hoping for is fewer thunder storms this summer. It is the number one killer of horn growth. 38 degrees with a rain snow mix at 10,000' shuts them down worse than anything.

Unlike Arizona that does get severe drought, in Utah it's extraordinarily rare when drought is so severe that there is no feed. Dry vegetation has much higher protein content than lush wet greens that they can't produce enough acid to digest properly.

I hunted the San Juan in 2010 which was the wettest year on record down there. It had the fewest 400" bulls (two) harvested since the early 90's that year.

You'll do just fine Mr LBH!

With that tag you should be able to hold out for a nice 290-310 bull!!! Oh wait, that's my upcoming elk hunt that I'm talking about!

Congrats on the tag! I too would keep it and make the most of it! I had spent a ton of time on the unit but realizing that it was more than likely a OIL tag when I drew in 2012 I still hired an outfitter. Best decision I could of made. I hunted with BTO. Straight up, honest guys that went above and beyond for me. Harvested a great bull with my bow. Whether you choose to hunt with an outfitter or not, I would still give Randy a call and get his take. Shoot me a PM if you would like to chat more.
