This is a very tough tag to draw. My Dad drew after 14 years of stacking points!! He's turning 60 this year and has never shot anything bigger than a rag bull. He's very excited about this tag. He lives in WA and will not be able to make it out scouting. However, I am in CO and will get out several times throughout the summer to help. That being said, if anyone has any pointers on where to begin scouting, that would be great! I understand hunting spots are sacred, but any help would be great. Thanks a lot!

Back to your Q suggest doing some searches on here and other forums as there are a number of 76 threads. I did that when I had a tag there last year and it was moderately helpful.

what season did he draw? If archery season the elk are EVERYWHERE. at least they were every place I looked last year. No problem finding elk. No knowledge of the rifle seasons.

Is he looking for a minimum size class of bull or just a representative mature 6 pt?

How many days is his season and how many can he hunt? Can/will he show up a few days early to get accimated to HIGH altitude and scout a bit for the opener? Could help ensure better success. I was at/above 11,000 feet constantly it seemed.

No offense but you seem self appointed this week. 1st Paul and now this guy.

I get being super leery. BTDT. Might want holster the pistola a bit.

You may not wish to offer help but a lot of folks are game. Especially with rare draws. OTC not so much ....

I hunted this area 20 years ago. The air is thin so being in best shape possible is key. We camped where the rio grande river starts around 11k feet. Seemed liked every drainage held elk but the bigger bulls were up above timber line and always over the the first ridge away from the roads. Good luck

Congrats to your dad!

Some good questions and advice above, just keep searching and researching. I wish I could help but the closest I've been is in 66. I may be seeking info here myself before too long, since I'll be going into the draw next year with 19 points and 76 is one of the units I'm considering trying to draw.

Good luck!

Don't get discouraged from asking where to start. In 2016 my buddy and I drew unit 32 Wyoming bull tags. The only two nonresidents to draw that year. I talked with several people on this forum and was told about a spring not on any maps. Hunted it and put a trail camera on it. Saw a 360 class 7x7 on camera but could not catch him there. (could not hunt it every day due to bad wind). Ended up killing a 342 6x6 on 6th day in another place. Be persistent. There are some great, helpful guys on here.

Yes, I only have 4 posts, but have been reading these threads for years...

Good luck, first step may be to hire an outfitter. I haven't hunted unit 76 myself and I no longer live in CO, but that isn't a soft hunt unit. That country is big and steep from the few times I have been in it...

Second, from others that I have met and known, its not really a sure fire trophy unit. I know, it takes a bunch of points to draw, but really isn't comparable to other states trophy units or even units in CO in my opinion.

Have fun, but keep your expectations in check since you are asking for help. It may take several trips down there to get an idea what drainages are accessible for you and your dad and your hunt style/experience.
