LAST EDITED ON Jun-19-18 AT 04:38PM (MST)[p]After 15 years wife and I finally drew Colorado unit 76 archery Elk. We live at 7000ft. in the Zuni mtn's Nm.
and are experienced traditional bow hunters, but we have never been to unit 76.
Plan to scout in July. Hoping for hints & help. We know this is a once in a life time hunt for most of us, so hope someone whose drawn 76 and experienced a good hunt would share a word or two. Wish we could have drawn this when we were 15 years younger! Thanks in advance.

Congratulations on the tags!

I'd love to be able to help out, but I only have experience in 66.
I will be considering unit 76 in the future to purge my 19 points in Colorado.

Living in Mississippi, I have never been able to do the summer scouting thing for elk, but I may try to work a trip in to see if elk are in an area that I knew them to frequent a few years ago. I'm thinking that if they are there in the summer, they should be very close during September. Isn't this correct?

Good Luck man, I'm sure that someone here will be able to help you out!

HI JEFF,
THANKS FOR YOUR REPLY.
WE ALSO WANTED TO USE OR POINTS BEFORE WE GET TOOOO OLD.
WE ARE 5 TO 6 HRS. BELOW THE UNIT IN NM. HOPE WE CAN SCOUT TWICE. THE ELK THAT ARE THERE NOW SHOULD BE THERE IN SEPT.
HOPFULLY WE CAN HELP YOU OUT WHEN YOU DRAW, WE SHOULD HAVE
ALOT MORE INFO. THEN.

THANKS

I hunted it once in 2014 (archery). There are elk just about everywhere in the unit, so a lot depends on the type of hunt you are looking for;

1)Wilderness areas you can backpack into or take horses,

2)some remote but non-wilderness areas that might require long hikes, motorcycle, ATV or good 4WD to access,

and

3)plenty of places you can day-hunt from trailheads or roads.

I too drew unit 76 archery this year. Maybe see you there. When are you hunting. 3 of us will be there the last 10 days. Two of us have hunted 76 archery before, and a rifle cow, and mule deer hunt. The elk in September will be high, 10,000 to 11,500 ft. Lots of burn areas too, be glassing them a lot. Have a friend who will bring horses. Was limited on previous hunt due to areas I knew we couldn't get them out on foot.

GOOD MORNING JOHN,
THANKS FOR THE HEADS UP ON THE BURN AREAS, WE HAVE HEARD THIS FROM A FEW PEOPLE NOW, ALSO THAT THEY ARE HIGH. WE DON'T HAVE HORSES SO WE MAY SET UP A SPIKE CAMP AND HUNT FROM THERE. WE ARE GOING TO BE SCOUTING IN A FEW WEEKS, WE WILL BE HUNTING THE LAST 2 1/2 WEEKS ALSO, WISH YOU ALL THE BEST OF LUCK. IT WOULD BE GREAT IF WE BUMPED INTO EACH OTHER!

Be aware that some of the trails will also be legally accessible to motorbikes! On the western end of the unit, an ATV or jeep is very beneficial as some of the road are very rough and some trails allow 50"max OHV's. You'll likely see lots of Recreationalist on many of the roads so getting off the roads a ways is best. Basecamping along the main roads is not the best way to do it in my opinion but some areas it might work fine. Like others have said, be prepared for steep hiking in many areas but lots of elk near treeline in September. Be sure to bring a spotting scope as many areas have good glassing spots.
