DWR called

Just got the call a Wasatch tag was turned in. I put in with a great mentor that has helped me a ton to help him have hopefully a chance at a bull of a lifetime. He has killed lots of elk, but is a meat hunter so it will be fun to see him have a crack at a nice bull while he can still get up and down hills.

If it's an archery tag, I'd find some isolated water holes.
It's been so dry, I'm sure the elk will be hanging near water this year.

Buddy still wants to hit Idaho with his kids, so is planning on sitting water a lot early.

Did it burn up the elk, Summer rains should get the grass growing back quick.

Yes it burned up a small portion of elk country, in a very large unit. There will not be hardly any impact in the " overcrowding".

Hell it might do some spots some good. I know places that almost never see a hunter in them.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-09-18 AT 10:36AM (MST)[p]Congrats on the tag! In 2012, I got the same call as a non-resident. Later, some guy from MM even helped this flatlander figure out what to do with an elk once it hit the ground (cough, cough...DBG)! It was a little overwhelming for someone used to deer only.

Here is a link to the fire map.

The year the Manti had the Huntington canyon fire we went up in the burn area in the fall and the elk were all over in it. It appeared they were loving the black bedding areas and they were flat out easy to see. I wouldn't let that fire keep me from hunting them this fall.

60k acres is a small area? have you even seen where it has burned or are you making assumptions from your computer

Thanks for the promo cut?????????

The simple fact of the matter...... this fire will not impact the hunt!!!!

The small amount of "elk country" burned will have little to effect on the hunting in this unit.

I think that the people that turn tags in, due to drought, floods, fires etc etc.... should be penalized not only by the forfeiture of the tag fee but by forfeiting the points of the next in line (i.e. If the person drew with 18 points and the next in line has 4 the person enters with 14 the following year) if they do not have a valid reason such as illness, deployment etc.

60k??? I would like to see your numbers, you are inflating it.

I was born, raised and still live in this area. So yes I know where the fire is, how much it has burned and the overall size of this unit.

Have you seen it? Or are you doing "math on your computer? While you are at it the math portion, look at how many acres the Wasatch unit is, compare it to the ACTUAL BURNED acres and see how much of the "elk country" is truly "ruined".

If it gets put out I'd be in that burn. The year the white water fire happened the area of the burn was closed, but we glassed it and WOW!

am I still making numbers up

Three days later and you are right at that cusp.

I find it interesting you would leave the post and answer none of my questions until three days has passed and you are almost there.

By your originally inflated number we should be at about 90k by now shouldn't we? And even though we have hit 60k finally, it's still not that much country in this unit, especially considering a pretty good portion of it is not accessible by the average joe.

But excuses could be made I suppose!

Nice try little buddy.

I had the tag in 2013, saw lots with 56 opportunities to kill and didn't take them because I was too picky. I missed one bull in the 360 range and never saw him again. Archery is hard, that year the grass was waist high and water everywhere.

Most of what has burned is private land anyways...

Hey guys.

DPB knows everything about the Wasatch, including what and where the fire burned. You are just making guesses and calculations from the internet and have probably never stepped foot on the unit.

60k acres is half the unit, and now it will be super crowded!!!

Yes. shhhhhhhh

He knows of these places, and knows they will be overrun and that is the need for the forfeiture of the tag......

Sssssshhhhhhh

Congrats on the tag, and on the smart decision!!!!

Let me know if you are having any problems or need some pointers

I was in the area this weekend and the Forrest Service had many of the roads blocked because of the fire, but they all sounded optimistic it should be out soon with the rains.

good luck!
